Harddrive isnt being recognised

I'm plugging my harddrive in and it says there isnt one plugged in its a 120gb elite harddrive can someone help, I think it may have something to do with the previous owner formatting it for memory instead of Xbox or something :s

Is it a microsoft-harddrive or is it a third-party harddrive?

If the previous owner formatted it incorrectly, the only way to do that is if it is not an official MS hard drive, then the system would only recognize it as a usb storage device only capable of using up to 16GB of space. That would render the rest of the hard drive unusable by the console.

Just to be sure it isn't a problem with your console, take that hard drive to a friend/family members house and try it on their console. If it reads fine then there is an issue with your console. If it still doesn't read it is an issue with the drive itself.

I recommend you buy brand new when dealing with the console/hdd. If you go the used route then it is buyer beware.

It is the official MS hard drive as it has the Microsoft sticker and the address and all the seals of authenticity so it can't have been formatted incorrectly, I've tried it on a seperate xbox and it has the same error. It's not that it's reading it as a different source of memory but it just can't read it at all it says there's no memory device inserted :S
It is the official MS hard drive as it has the Microsoft sticker and the address and all the seals of authenticity so it can't have been formatted incorrectly
Sure it can. Plug it in via a third party transfer cable and the 360 will present a menu asking if you'd like to format the device. It ends up being turned into a regular FAT32 HDD with a 16GB USB Memory Unit on it.

That is what happened in this case. The drive has been rendered inoperable as a 360 HDD. There is no sanctioned method to restore the drive.
