Cannot use Windows Update (Error number: 0x8024D001)

Hi,

 

I have just done a fresh install of Windows XP Pro 32-bit w/SP3 on a Dell Precision M90. I have installed all the device drivers, and then when I attempt to get Windows Updates I get the following error after it checks the Updater's version:

 

"The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem."

 

"[Error number: 0x8024D001]"

 

I have tried reinstalling Windows, this has not fixed the problem.

 

I also tried installing one of the later versions of Windows Update, here:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/WindowsUpdate/redist/standalone/7.4.7600.226/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
...which has made no difference.

 

I have also tried the Microsoft Fix It here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949104
...which has not solved the issue.

Try the following unofficial Windows Update Agent. MS's latest is not the latest. Boo MS.

Download WindowsUpdateAgent7.6.7600.256-257.zip to your desktop (MS does not make the latest version of Windows Update Agent. Only 7.4.7600.243 so we make it with this). (Moderator's edit: or this, for those who are reticent about downloading stuff off non-Microsoft websites.)

Unzip it, go into the folder and double click RunMe-MakeInstallWindowsUpdateAgent.bat.
It will download, from MS, the files needed to create Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.256/257 and then install it.
You'll be left with the installer, WindowsUpdateAgent7.6.7600.256-257.exe. Keep it or delete it. Your choice.

Antivirus scan for WindowsUpdateAgent7.6.7600.

OK, my bad. I forgot a couple of double quotes. I'm fixing it now.
Just run the file it made by clicking start, run, browse. Browse to the file and double click it. Add /wuforce after the .exe and press enter.
