No option to compress old files in disk cleanup

I have a laptop running Vista and I am running low on disk space so I wanted to compress my old files usinf the disk cleanup option but, when i run disk cleanup there is no option to compress my old files.  Can anyone shed some light on where the option has gone and if i can get it back. Thanks

You can compress selected files and folders using this method: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/102504-compress-folder-file.html

Compressing Windows system files may cause problems. Some file formats are not worth compressing as they are already compressed. For example, jpg and mp3.
