Windows Home Server 2011 (cannot retrieve activation status)

I upgraded my Windows Home Server (WHS) system from Version 1 (32bit which ran with very little issues for 5 years) to Version 2 (aka WHS 2011, a64bit) a few weeks ago and installed latest addins and drivers. I have a single 3 TB Segate / Western Digital USB3 drive (Windows didn't see this so I installed the driver separtely) in addition to 2 250GB SATA drives and 1 1TB SATA drive.

I went online and activitated Windows successfully. I was "genuine" at this point. I finised the configuration of WHS V2 and installed the Connector on the clinet systems.

Next I made sure Windows Defender and Firewall working (ran a test scan and created folder shares on WHS V2 server and the desktop client), installed MS SkyDrive, Adobe Reader and Google Chrome (leaving IE as my default browser of course). I moved the data folders around from where Windows had assigned them (the smallest logical drive, the back of the C drive) since Version 2 of WHS does NOT have the single stoarge pool functionality that V1 had (why this wonderfull feature was removed I cannot fathom) and I need to have documents, backups, pictures and music on separate drives to use the storage available and make everthing fit.

Next I ran Windows Update numerous times to get all the WHS V2 and Windows Server 2008 R2 patches installed. Several reboots were necessary. All steps above was about 12 hours work.

This config worked just fine for awhile (at least a day and one nightly backup ran... though it did not complete successfully for some reason) and then something happened:

1. I could no longer launch the WHS V2 Dashboard application (the administration and usage management tools for WHS V2) on the server itself or on the two client PCs (desktop Windows 7 Pro 32bit and a laptop 64bit Widows 7 Pro 64bit) either. Instead there is always Windows Home Eerver error message "Cannot retreive the activation status. Please try again later.". (I've tried again of course, many times.)

2. I could no longer run Windows Update.

3. I had left the default desktop background and noted that there was now a message in the lower lefthand corner of the screen: "Windows Server 2008 R2 Build 7601 This copy of Windows is not genuine".

At this point I went out on the net and searched for solutions. Spent hours and hours and hours. Tried everything I saw that I though might be applicable. Sadly nothing seemed to help or even change my situation.

What did work? I could get to the drives/files on the WHS sevrer and see its clients, and vice versa. I could use the WHS server to surf the net if I wished to (abeit with "Vista like" nagware messages in the middle of the screen that I could not get to go away). But at this point WHS V2 was basically useless for its stated and intended purpose: media sharing and client PC backups.

I set the matter aside for 5 weeks while I took took a business trip and a vacation. Then when there was time I did a complete WHS V2 install from the manufacturer's CD (Microsoft) for the second time. I was very careful this time. Following instruction to the letter. No issues (no issues the first time for that matter).

At the very end I renamed the disk drives like last time. This is necessary since there are 6 different HD in total (the system install partitioned the C drive into to logical drives of 60GB and 185GB), all odd sizes.

Shzam! At this point or shortly after I had the very same problem as after my first install: "Windows not genuine", etc.

What to do next? More Googling, of course. I found and ran Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool (v1.9.0027.0). It found licensing error 0x80070424.

I ran SFC /SCANNOW. It helped. It said that I had corrupt files that it had repaired. I rebooted and then the message in the lower righthand corner of the screen was not there and I could now run Windows Update successfully. (All patchs are applied.)

I saw several other suggestions while constructing this question (mostly Window Genuine Advantage) and I have checked out each of them. The net of what I got from them was that I should reinstall a 3rd time. Obviously that's a "no go" in this circumstance.

As for upgrading my Intel disk driver, I did download it (SP47845) as discussed widely in other posts, but it would not install. The error message was "This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing this software.".

Please help. I've now got over 40 hours into this "home recreation project" (not). The server cannot be used. My only other option would be to regress back to WHS V1.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
 Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.

Below is the requested MGSDIAG tool output.  Note that SAADiag was run after I ran "SFC /scannow" again this morning.  You see, over night while my system was running, but idle, my system became "not genuine Windows" again.  Weird!  Running SFC cleared this problem for the 2nd time.  Anyway, here is the requested info:

It looks like your licensing service has been 'uninstalled' - have you been using any form of registry cleaner on the system?

There is a problem with your Software Protection Service - something is preventing it from starting on demand the way it should.

Please open an Elevated (Administrator) Command Prompt window and use the following commands....

net start sppsvc

sc qc sppsvc

sc queryex sppsvc

sc qprivs sppsvc

sc qsidtype sppsvc

sc sdshow sppsvc

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)

1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the CP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.

2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Windows, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.

3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Noel, thx for quick reply.

I mentioned that I ran the whole install process twice.  Yes, the first install I did cleanse the registry (using System Mechanic which I've found to be not very aggressive but also safe).  However the 2nd time I did nto cleanse the registry and I supposed that might have been a problem.

I just tried to run "net start sppsvc" from an elevated comman prompt.  I got the error message:

 "The service name is invalid.

More help is available by typing net helpmsg 2185"

I did type "net helpmsg 2185" and got the same error message and nothing more.  Do I need to to install more services?  During my first WHS V2 install I installed lots of services that I didn't absolutely need at this time (SQL Server for example).  During the 2nd install I install what I thought was the minimum for my current planned uses.

Noel,

When I typed "REG QUERY HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\sppsvc" at an elevated command prompt, exactly as above including correct capitalization, I got the following message:

ERROR: The system was uable to find the specified registry key or value.

So then I left "sppsvc" off the end of the reg query you suggested to see what was there.  Here is query response:

Noel,

I followed your instructions.  "Success" was reported for all commands.  I rebooted and reran MGADiag.  Below is the results, which seem to suggest that I still have a problem (hr = 0x80070002).

Windows is "Genuine".  I am able to launch the WHS V2 Dashboard itself but the cleanup removed much of the content and my external access server set up does not work and can't be fixed.  (The status display dialog box says its "off" and since I clicked the the setup button the step "setting up my router" ran 20 minutes (so far) and so I think its in an endless loop.

Just guessing here but it appears to me that the Windows Server 2008 R2 portion of the problem resolution external server setup ) is now complete.  I've now "just WHS V2 problems.  The list is:

- the external server setup is inoperable.  The "turn on" function runs in an endless loop when trying to set up my router (it's connected in the DMZ and it thinks (I think) that it is connected on port 192.168.0.6.

- all the network client computers I set up origninally are gone (and the client computers can't log in now via their WHS V2 Dashboards)

- I cannot add additional client backups (button doesn't work properly) to restore what is also gone.

- The Add-ins tab shows no add-ins installed.  In fact there are various add-ins installed and add I tried are working.

- The Server Folders and the Server Drive Drives tabs with the Server Folders and Drives tab show no folders and no hard dirves.  They are in fact there though.  I can access A-OK from the desktop.

It seems obvious I need to do a partial registry restore (hopely WHS V2 is smart enough to have one after two weeks as I set this up orginally) and I will look into this next.

If I can't resolve this myself then at this point I'm thinking I should move over to the Windows Server 2011 (WHS V2) forum to address that.  Please advise if you feel differently.

I'd like to leave this open for another day or so to see if the issues I've described previously recur.  I'm hoping / expecting that the solutions you've provided should work again if there is recurrance, but this is of course is far from a certainity.  Regardless, I'll post here again to close the thread properly so other WHS V2 customers can get max value.

Thx you VERY MUCH for your support here.  You are are a real Comunity Star!

Rodger
