However, you may try to delete the registry key from the computer and check if it helps you fix the issue.

Delete the RebootRequired registry entry. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, in the start search box, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Locate the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\AutoUpdate
3. Right-click the RebootRequired registry entry, click Delete, and then click OK to confirm.
4. Restart the computer, and then try again to visit the Windows Update Web site.

Registry Disclaimer:

Sometimes this problem is caused by two Windows registry entries that have become corrupted. To fix the problem, you have to use Registry Editor to delete the corrupted Registry entries.

However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.

Has anyone any update on this problem, or when Microsoft is going to fix it?

I completely reinstalled a machine with XP Pro last week and it is suffering this problem with MSupdate.  I managed to backtrack to Windows Update which works fine, but I get this error if I try MSupdate.  I have tried both solutions suggested in the result - reboot the machine, makes no difference - delete the rebootrequired registry key, it isn't present anyway.  There is no reboot required indication on the task bar, nor does it show any updates to install on shutdown.

This morning I have tried to update two servers running 2003 server, both are now also suffering the same problem and the the two solutions give the same results.  I have failed to fall back to Windows update on these machines, perhaps because MSupdate has been working fine for a long time.  The last time I ran MSupdate on these machines, about 3 months ago, it worked perfectly.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have tried the solutions in the KB, but they don't solve the problem. I still have the "restart you computer now" notification on teh taskbar AND I cannot get any Windows Updates.
