Can't add a Microsoft account to a new Windows 8 PC, nor can I change to using a local account

I purchased a brand new Windows 8 PC.  During initial boot, it asks me a few questions...one of those, is if I want to login with a Windows account.  I tried to and, after being authenticated by the Windows account service, Windows told me it couldn't use the account or something, but not to worry, I could create a local account and simply change it to a Microsoft account later, so I created a local account.

After creating the local account, I tried to change it to a Microsoft account and received this exact error message "We're sorry, but something went wrong.  This user wasn't added to this PC code 0xd0000225."  I tried to do this with THREE different Microsoft accounts, all which can be used to login to Hotmail with just fine, so, I know the accounts and passwords are just fine...this appears to be a problem with the OEM's Windows installation on the PC (as I have installed Windows 8 myself on other PCs and signed in with my Microsoft account just fine...so I believe Windows 8 works properly, when installed properly)...here's why I believe that:

When I try to switch to my Microsoft account, after providing my username and password, I'm authenticated by the Windows account service, because the next step in the wizard on the PC then shows me the phone number I supplied to the Windows Account service...so clearly, the account service validated me.  On this PC, Windows gets all the way to the end of the wizard (so I think it thinks everything regarding the Microsoft account service was fine), but then it throws this error.  It's like there is something preventing Windows itself from creating/adding this Microsoft account to the registry, etc., and, as a I mentioned above, I've logged on to Windows 8 PCs I've setup myself just fine, so I suspect that the OEM has done something weird with their installation of Windows which is preventing it from adding the account.

So, the question:  What exception in the Windows 8 code is occurring, causing it to throw this error code?  What is this error code for, exactly?  Armed with that knowledge, we should be able to figure out what setting within Windows we can change to allow the account to be added.  My alternative at this point is to simply return this PC to the store, and purchase a PC from a different manufacturer.  FYI...I already called the OEM, they simply had me reimage the machine to its factory settings, which I did, and the same thing happens, which is why I believe their OEM image has some wonky setting in it that's causing this.

Thanks

Hi,

It’s unfortunate that you are unable add a Microsoft account on windows 8. I will definitely help you with this.

Let’s follow these methods and check if it helps.

Method 1: Create a new user account and check if the issue persists.

a. Press the “Windows Key + i”

b. Click More PC Settings

c. On the left, click Users

d. Click “Add a User”, and follow the onscreen instructions to create a new user account.

If new user account works, refer steps on how to copy files to the new user profile.

Copy old files to new profile:

a. Navigate to C:\Users\Corrupted_Profile_Name\. The profile name will be the corrupted profile name.

b. Copy all the files.

c. Open Control panel and Folder View options uncheck Hide protected operating system files.

d. Navigate to C:\Users\Corrupted_Profile_Name and copy Appdata folder.

Note: Do not copy these three files. NtUser.dat, NtUser.ini, NtUser.log.

e. Navigate to C:\Users\New_Profile_Name\.

f. Paste all those files here.

Method 2:

Run a system file checker scan and check if that helps. Refer the following steps to run SFC scan.

a) Move the mouse pointer to bottom left of the screen where you see preview of start menu and Right-click to bring up a list of Windows settings.
b) Click on ‘Command Prompt (Admin) to bring up elevated command prompt. Note: Click ‘Yes’ if it prompts for permission.
c) In the command prompt type in the following command: ‘sfc /scannow’.

Method 3: Refresh the operating system and check.

Hope it helps. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to let us know. We will be glad to help you.

Thank you.

Thanks for trying, but none of that resolved the issue.  Without knowing what causes that error code, I don't see any way we'll ever know how to solve it.  I simply avoided the problem.  I took that PC back to where I bought it, and bought a different PC from a different OEM.  Using the same Microsoft account worked like a champ on that PC.

So, good news?  Windows 8 and the Microsoft account work just fine.  Bad news?  There's an OEM out there doing something with their factory install of Windows 8 that's going to cause a lot of unhappy customers with both them, and Windows, unfortunately.  Just as an FYI, I also called the OEM about the problem, and their "solution" was a factory reset of the PC, which also, didn't resolve the issue.  I hope someone determines what causes that error, and makes sure that all Windows OEMs don't do whatever it is they're doing in their factory installs to cause it...and I hope that happens pretty quick, for everyone's sake.

I am having the same problem, at first I though it was a problem creating with a Microsoft account but then I tried a local account and the account itself will be created but when I try to log into that account it gives me the HI we are setting things up message and a second after that says signing out and drops me back to the login screen. I have 5 accounts set up on this PC 2 work and the rest give me the same issues.

I came up with a work around but its not ideal. If I set up the new accounts with administrator access the can log in fine, as soon as I remove administrator access from the account and set it back to standard however they cant log in.

Same problem here.
I purchased a new Lenovo Laptop N580. I setup my Admin account at first run.
I can Add local user, and can logon using it.
But when  I try to switch this local user to MS account it gives me error 0xd0000225 after I enter msn email address.
So, it does not allow me to go to MS Store.
From one hand, I am happy - it save me money, but from another hand I feel sorry for MS, Lenovo, their products, their tech support staff, their policies, their customers who paid money to get headaches.

Finally, Google helped me to find a solution: Ubuntu !
It is Free of charge, Free of headaches, runs Fast, and has many Flavors.
Go Ubuntu!

New User Account is Created, But It Does not Work - not only that but it nor the guest (has been turned on) show up in files, folders or registry. the error says that the profile service failed. I tried all the fixes for other versions because there isn't one for window 8 - I can tell you they don't load because apart from being in the user list in pc settings they are nowhere to be found anywhere else. This problem started after I refreshed my computer by the way. Somebody please I am begging you, fix this. I spent days restoring all my devices, drivers, apps and software. I don't want to have to go through this again.
