Windows updates that refuse to install and microsoft's fix it downloads do nothing with error codes 8000FFFF, 80070026, 26.

I have had several windows updates from at least a year ago if not two that refuse to download.  They are always there and every time I turn my computer off, it prompts me to install them, but it fails every time.  Now, I have recent updates that have appeared that will not download or install either.  I am given error codes, but the error codes have no corresponding explanation for what they are or how to fix them.  I have downloaded fix-it files from microsoft's website, and those install fine but produce no results.

The updates which I cannot install are:

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 for x64-based Systems (kb2604114)
Same as above (KB2729451)
Same as above (KB2742598)
Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932)

Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows 7 x64-based Systems (KB2284742)
Update for Kernal-Mode Driver Framework version 1.11 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2685811)
Update for Rights Management Services Client for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB979099)
Update for User-Mode Driver Framework version 1.11 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2685813)
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2799926)

If I attempt to install all of them, I am given the following codes which have not helped me:

Code 8000FFFF
Code 80070026
Code 26

I am using an HP Pavilion dv8 laptop with Windows 7 x64 as the OS.  I use Norton Internet Security to protect my computer.  If there is any more information necessary to help diagnose and fix my problem, I will provide it.

Thank you.

Also, my USB ports suddenly no longer function.  I do not know if this is related to the aforementioned problem, but all of my USB ports acknowledge that something (USB mouse, iPod, USB drive) has been plugged in with a ping, but I am unable to use or access them.

Hi Sebastian,

The issue could be caused if any third party security software or application interfering with the Updates of your computer.

I would really appreciate if you could answer the following questions:

1. Which Microsoft Fix It did you try?

2. Have you made any recent hardware or software changes to your computer prior to the issue?

3. Did you install the Update manually?

Follow the methods below:

Method 1:

I suggest you to disable your Firewall and Anti-virus application software for temporarily to check if you are able to install the Updates properly.

Step 1:

Disable antivirus software:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Disable-antivirus-software

Important Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Step 2:

Turn Windows Firewall on or off:

Note: Once you have done with the above steps, turn on Windows Firewall.

If you still face the same issue, then please follow the next method.

Method 2:

You need to perform a Clean Boot to prevent any conflicting third party applications from interfering with your computer and try to install one Update at a time and check.
