Security update KB3079904 caused all kinds of problems.

Good day,

Today I was prompted to install security update KB3079904. After installation and rebooting, the installation of the update was succesful, however, my system (Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit) ran into a couple of issues.

First of all, the antivirus was completely disabled and could not be enabled. (Windows Action Center gave an alert that the antivirus was disabled, so did the program itself)
When trying to manually enable it, or updating it, I received an unusual "acces denied" error. The community of the antivirus software (Avira) said when this happens you should reboot the computer and everything would be fine.(which was not the case)
Apart from that, my Realtek HD Audio was not running either. (it did not appear on the right corner of the task bar, as it normally should) so there was no sound. I went to the Device Manager to check what was going on, but the device manager tab was completely blank. (nothing appeared)
So I was pretty sure it was caused by the KB3079904 update. After uninstalling it and rebooting, everything was fine again. So I'm convinced this KB3079904 security update has some issues inside it?

Well, I tried it again, but this time I left the installation to proceed during shutdown in stead of installing first and then shutting down. Everything is working fine so far. Realtek sound system is executed this time and so is the antivirus.
Since 16 other people have pushed the "Me Too" button, I think I'm going to leave this issue unresolved for now, however if I were you I would just uninstall the update and try it over.

Today, I too was prompted to install security update KB3079904. After installation and rebooting, the installation of the update was succesful, however, my system (Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit) ran into one problem.

As soon as rebooting had completed I noticed that I wasn't connected to the internet.  Upon further inspection the wireless network adapter wasn't functioning.   I am using an Atheros AR9485WB-EG with a driver version 9.2.0.470.  The device status box had a message of:

Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52).

I had been using the wireless network right up to the point of the reboot for the security update so that seems to be when the problem occured.  I have now uninstalled that particular security update and reinstalled it with no change in the problem.   How do I get the signature for the driver corrected?

My problem is that the update won't even install, I have run the trouble shooter twice. And ran the trouble shooter from the Microsoft web site. restarted the computer and followed all suggestions. at this point I give up on the update. besides in about one week I am planning on updating to windows 10 anyhow.

I found that when I tried to login, it would freeze.  Seems to only affect my administrator level account.  I am able to log on as a regular user and thru UAC, uninstalled the update.

I just followed the registry fix outlined and have hidden the update to observe how it goes with the population

I also have an issue with this patch on Vista 32 SP2

This got downloaded automatically yesterday and installed successfully but said it needed to restart to complete the change, that went through fine and I got the "Configuring..." message which also completed, but after I restart the system again Vista hangs.

So... it shows the black Microsoft Corp screen and the green blocks, then it moves to the next stage to start loading proper and remains black, I never get to my Vista screen where it asks me to log on.

After 10-15mins I give up and power cycle to try again, it fails again.

Then I start a launch repair, it states it wouldn't start as it has an issue with a patch, does a restore from the restore point and I'm back in business and Vista boots.

Vista see's I need the KB3079904 update, downloads the update and around we go again

Hopefully Microsoft will fix and re-release?

My version of this issue was very much like these two threads with a Win2k-like screen (was Aero) where the desktop and display graphics struggled, startup/restart/shutdown took forever (Win7 Ultimate SP1):

So, I disabled the font cache service and that sped up shutdown/restart considerably, but event and desktop/display issues persisted.  Did the .dat to .old recommendations - no help.

Had to rollback via restore point - fixed.

At work, also Win7U SP1, same thing but a second restart after update cleared it up.

This update appears to be causing some sort of font-related delay at startup that prevents the event notify service connection and timeouts/disables desktop and display components on some systems.  My fresh Win8.1 systems updated fine.

I think this update needs an update...

(in admin command prompt window, i.e., right-click run as admin)

icacls.exe atmfd.dll /grant Administrators:(F)
rename atmfd.dll x-atmfd.dll
(this part is only for 64-bit Windows)

Windows 7 Home Premium SP1: KB3079904 fails on installation. Then, it gets re-listed in available updates. Used the Update Readiness tool, Update Diags, nuked c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution\downloads, it makes no difference, the update fails to install.

all sorts of problems, with video playback drop down menus etc.  If I get it to work on a second installation I'll let you know

Still having problems with other updates on one of my pcs, where it keeps installing updates whereas my other pc shows no updates needed

I had reported this else where but added it here as it follows this thread.

After the update laptop was slow, could not access many webpages. I could not access GOOGLE (because ti was going to my https page) but could YAHOO. I could NOT access my banking sites. Banking  Sites would tell me to clear cache - did not work.  I use Firefox.

For goggle I get

An error occurred during a connection to www.google.com. Cannot communicate securely with peer: no common encryption algorithm(s). (Error code: ssl_error_no_cypher_overlap)

    The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.
    Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem.

I was able to use another laptop with no problem that was not updated.

Firefox. IE or Chrome - none work for https SSL sites.  Secure sites are not working.

I uninstalled KB3079904 - nothing changed.

I rerolled back to PC with recovery to before the update - nothing happened

I went to the Firefox web site and REFRESHED firefox- Now I can see google mail directly  but I still get the error with google itself. Email no longer has the ability to send attachments etc, a lot of stuff is missing. .

I use Bitdefender, Malwarebytes anit-exploit,  and Malware bytes Ant-malware.  Same on the other 8.1  laptop that work fine that has not been updated.

I am now going to investigate BitDefeneder, and the others if the patch broke any of them.  IT SEEMS THAT BITDEFENDER "SCAN SSL" may be causing this based on my experiments. Disabling "SCAN SSL" give me access - I am still testing.  I am working with BitDefender. SCAN SSL can be disabled with no worries in BitDefender so that at least is a temp fix.

BitDefender indicated it looks like it broke their code for SSL and  investigated.  Their response was that Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware may be interfering  with Bitdefender. SInce the problem happened with the update and turning SCAN SSL off solved my problem I am not removing those two programs I value.

I shut off Bitdefender Anti-spam (which I think is cloud based) and got back the PCs browser speed.  So it looks like the MS update screwed that too.
