Restoring Windows XP (.bkf) files in Windows 7

I had a complete computer failure and replaced my laptop with a new one running Windows 7. I need to restore all of my files from backups made in Windows XP (.bkf files). This does not seem to be possible in Windows 7. I have seen some suggested solutions that involve restoring on a machine running XP and then transferring the files but I do not have a second machine on which to do this. How can I access the backed-up files?

And if that does not work, you may want to wait until Microsoft releases the NTBackup-Restore Utility for Windows 7 (as they did for Windows Vista). Check out this thread.
