The Windows 10 Fall Creators Update 1709 Says I don’t Have Enough Space on System Reserved Partition to Upgrade.

 I am trying to upgrade, but the Windows 10 1709 installation says I don’t have enough space on the system reserved partition for the upgrade.

 Your System Reserved partition might be too small and you need to resize it to about 600 Mbs. See instructions how.  


Press Windows key + R

Type: diskmgmt.msc

Hit Enter

Click the system drive to view the size.

For this example, I will be using Ease us partition manager:

  • After installing Easeus partition manager, launch the program.
  • Select the system partition where Windows is installed.
  • Click Resize/Move button on the toolbar

Under Decide size and position, use the knob and drag to the left until a desired amount of space is allocated. Look in the Unallocated Space Before: field to see how much. Once that is done, release.

You will now see an unallocated amount of disk space created. Click OK

Click Apply and OK to confirm changes. Your computer will be restarted to apply the changes.

After restart, log in and launch Disk Management – press Windows key + R > type:diskmgmt.msc then hit Enter on your keyboard.

Select the System Reserverd partition then right click it and click Extend Volume

Select the Unallocated space we created earlier then click Next then click Finish

You should now have a large enough System Reserved partition to accommodate Windows 10 setup.

Important note: Backup your computer:
When making significant changes to your computer such as updating the operating system, you should always backup. See links to resources about backing up by clicking the link for the respective version of Windows you are running: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1

What if my partition is already at the suggested 450MB and there's nothing in it (100% free space)?

Thanks for the post. I tried using Ease US partition but it would not let me extend my reserved partition volume (EFI, GDPT or whatever ha). My antivirus software caught a trojan on the install, but i feel it was not a real trojan, just a part of the software that needed access to the reserved partition, and that's why Ease US didnt work for me. 

Anyways, i tried the mini partition free software (another software option) and was able to borrow 50 mb from my system recovery partition. I took all i could get and extended my EFI by all 50 mb. I rebooted, ran windows update assistant, and am currently enjoying the wonders of 1709!

Im seemingly stable for now. Please note, for whomever else reads this, i did attempt to reset my pc (clean install) with no luck.

I have a ryzen 7 1700 cpu, asrock x370 itx am4 motherboard, Samsung evo 1tb ssd, 16 gb ddr4 ram. I believe the root of the problem has to do with windows lack of access to Asrocks UEFI.

But hey, im on 1709!!!!!! Spoiler, its pretty awesome. I may actually ditch chrome and use edge now.... What!?

I have your identical setup. My issue was that, I chose to download the drivers from the bios. It put the download in the reserved partition. I had to go in and clean that up and restart and it worked.

I believe the root of the problem has to do with windows lack of access to Asrocks UEFI.

I had a similar problem with my HP Stream 8 tablet and resolved it by deleting the unused Microsoft created 16 MB FAT32 Partition and extending the EFI partition to use this space then running the upgrade again from an installation media USB stick I made using the media creation tool. Bottom line was Microsofts Update to version 1709 wasn't clever enough to modify partitions for itself to fix this - it should have!
