Windows 10 Pro - Another installation is already in progress

Hi,

I am running Windows 10 Pro - build 10240, it is .  This was a fresh install, NOT an upgrade (although this PC was running 8.1 I upgraded and after numerous issues with Apps not working opted to format and reload from a DVD created via the MS tool run on a different PC)

It was initially running fine and as you can expect from a fresh build there was a lot to install.  After installing MS Office 2013 (which seems to work fine), I now get an error message when I try to install anything else.  The message varies from application to application but I believe it is essentially saying the same thing:

Windows Essentials 2012:

Another program is preventing windows essentials from installing.  Wait for the other program to install, and then try installing again

Visual Studio Ultimate 2012:
Microsoft Visual Studio Ultimate 2012 has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available

Intel Driver Update Utility 2.2:

0x80070652 - Another installation is already in progress. Complete that installation before proceeding with this install

This last one is interesting as it provides me with an error log.  The relevant portion appears to be:

[1AF8:1138][2015-09-07T18:35:51]w308: Automatic updates could not be paused due to error: 0x80040154. Continuing...

I have reset the PC multiple times and searched for fixes but none have worked so far.  These include:

BTW, at least on my system the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\Inprogress key appears to not exist...

I know that not all of the above are necessarily specific to Windows 10, but they all relate to the same error or files.  Any help is much appreciated!

Thanks

Hi Shippwrek,

Welcome to Microsoft Community and thank you for your interest in Windows 10.

I understand the inconvenience that you are experiencing. I will definitely assist you.

The issue you are facing usually displayed due to Windows update is not installed or all the updated device driver is not installed on the computer. Let’s try simple troubleshooting steps and check if it helps in resolving the issue. Follow the below steps:

Check if all the Windows update are installed and Update the Device Drivers on the Computer for all the devices installed on the computer.

Step 1.

Check for all Windows updates if any Windows updates are available. If so, install the same and check if it helps.

Type “Updates” in the search bar and click on “Check for Updates” from the left pane.

Now click on “Check for Updates” button on the right pane, to receive a fresh list of updates and then install all the updates listed there.

For any issues while installing Windows Updates, you may also refer to this link:

http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9830262

If no driver updates are available via Windows Update, then you may install them for all the devices on the computer from the Computer Manufacturer’s website.

Step 2:

Go to the computer manufacturer’s website and search for the latest Windows 10 drivers available for all the devices on the computer and then install them by following the instructions given in the website. And let us know the statues.

Hope this helps. Post us with status we will be glad to help you.

Hi,

Thanks for your response.  I checked for updates as you said and there were some.  I installed them and one failed with the following message:

Update for Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Tools for Office Runtime (KB3001652) - Error 0x80070643

So I ran the Windows Update Diagnostic Tool you linked to and it completed with the following message:

Service registration is missing or corrupt - fixed

I then went back to Windows Update and re-tried the KB3001652 update but it failed again with the message above.  I again tried the Windows Update Diagnostic Tool however the second time it said there were no issues to fix.

I have since tried to install one of the items in the first post that failed and it failed with exactly the same error message.

Thanks

Matt

I'm having this same issue with Windows 10 stating "Another Installation is already in progress"

I have gone through the same steps mentioned in this post to resolve the issue with the same results as Matt

I installed all the proper updates for Windows 10 then tried to re-install the selected software with the same "Another Install is already in progress"

I used the downloaded bug fixer you link to above and got "Service registration is missing or corrupt - fixed" then afterwards I go to re-install the selected software and received the same error message "Another Install is already in progress"  Then re-ran the bug fix and it says "Service registration is missing or corrupt - fixed".

I've searched tons of message boards and this was an issue in Windows 7 through 8.1 and there was a similar software fix/patch that would work with those versions of Windows but not 10 (as the link from Microsoft reads my Windows Version and says "(x) We're sorry, but your operating system is not supported by Microsoft Fix it at this time" [https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/mats/program_install_and_uninstall/en-us?wa=wsignin1.0])

I have now reset my computer twice spending more than 4 hours reinstalling from scratch JUST WINDOWS before spending the next six hours quickly installing every program I need before receiving that error message reappears.

And once again, I will be forced to reinstall Windows 10 from scratch in order to avoid this ridiculous error message.

Hi,

Thank you for keeping us updated on this query.

Perform system restore from the link below and check if the issue is resolved (Applies to Windows 10 also):

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-pc

Note: Though it is said that System Restore does not affect your personal information such as email, documents, photos, videos, etc., but there is highly possible that some of your personal files are deleted while system restoring.

During System Restore, there may be errors and such errors may cause damage to the files that are present in the system. And, computer shutdown during restoring process may also lead to file loss. Sometimes when System Restore is failed, it may lead to loss of important files as well.

Hope this helps!

Actually, no that doesn't help!

What you are telling us to do here is to run a process which will essentially reset windows. As David mentioned, he has already performed a clean install and the issue came back. Even if the restore only affects windows and doesnt delete any programs (office etc) there is no guarantee that the issue wont return as you are treating a sympton and not the cause.

We want a cure and not to have to proverbially cut our leg off because of an infected to nail!

In short, no your answer is not helpful, please look for another!

Thanks

Matt

For me I have the same issue since a week I would say on a fresh install. I'm convinced it has to do with windows updates.

I am getting the same message whether I'm trying to install new apps or delete them from my system. on pre-windows 10 OSs, the fix was to go and stop msiexec.exe processes via the Task Manager. Would this fix work fro windows 10 and if so, where do access the msiexec.exe file in Task Manager in windows 10 as it does not appear in Task Manager under processes?

Thank you, I had the same problem and your comment helped me work out what to do! If you go into task manager there is a process called windows installer. msiexec.exe appears to be included in this. I 'end task'ed it and that solved the problem for me.

Thanks a lot it directed me to the right point. I had several instances of the installer in the task manager. By ending them and restarting I could launch a new installation of my program. It worked realy well. Later on the same issue happened again for an installationn of Adobe premiere. I looked at the task manager and found several installer processes. I ended them and restarted my installation and it worked.

So thanks a lot for the right operations to do.

Thank you very much for your help.  I had already tried ending the process of any and all installer processes and they just kept re-opening and I kept getting the same error message coming back... however...

This evening in a fit of mildly drunken ctrl-alt-del task manager frustrated rage I just kept hammering the end process as soon as any installer process started (spurred on by your post ;-).  After a couple of minutes of this and losing count of the number of installer processes that had re-opened and been killed I suddenly got a pop up message saying that the installation of Office had failed... (words to that effect... but 100% about an MS Office installation.

Now I had installed Office weeks ago and had happily been using it... but I guess it had got some blocker going somewhere... anyway, it asked me if I wanted to retry... I said NO!

I then tried to install the aforementioned Intel Driver Update Utility and got a message saying that a previous installation of Office was not complete, would I like to continue it or undo it (again words to that effect) so I clicked to undo it.

After that I can now Install anything as normal... and office still works fine.

So, thank you very much SurenMeras and to any MS person... the actual fix for this issue (at least in my instance) is definitely NOT to perform a System Restore, but to kill the offending process.  It would be really handy if you could create a tool that would actually identify and kill an installation process that has stalled!
