Windows 10 Disk usage 100 %

I upgraded my Win7 Pro 64 bit machine to Windows 10 Pro. I have two SSD's in my machine. After succesfull installation of Win 10, a few reboots, I finally was ready to check out the new OS. But, any app I tried to load said (not responding). Then some checking, and the problem is that disk 0 (C-Drive) was at 100 %, and stayed at 100 %! I tried to disable prefetch, superfetch, search index, disabled onedrive, but none of that changed the problem. After several hours, I gave up, and went back to my Win7 installation. What is going on in Win 10 and disk at 100 %?

Not sure of the issue, but I am also effected and it seems everyone else is, or at least a lot of people...

hopefully Microsoft will address this issue pretty fast, tempted to go back to 8.1 if its not fixed asap. very frustrating issue.

I gave the installation of Windows 10 Pro another try. In the Task Manager on the Details pane, I enabled the columns I/O reads, I/O writes, I/O read bytes, and I/O write bytes. That indeed showed me that the culprit was Acronis 11.5, which I had on my Windows 7 installation. Apparently that software was messing Windows 10 up. After uninstall of Acronis 11.5, Windows 10 started working correctly.

Essentially: Those who have Acronis True Image 2015 for Windows 10 installed will likely see a freeze of their Win10 system. On Acronis's forums, quite a few people have listed the same problem. To Microsoft: Why would a Acronis product which worked in Win7 and Win 8.x, freeze Win10?

The freeze is, that after 5 to 15 minutes, the Disk I/O of Drive 0 (C) goes to 100 %. When this happened, the machine is dead, only power off works.

I think I finally figured out the missing point. My failing machine have the SSD Crucial M500 and after the Win10 upgrade, it did not have Intel Rapid Storage Technology (Intel RST) installed. After download from Intel and running "SetupRst.exe", and reboot, my freeze went away. And ATI2015 could do the backup, with no freezes!

I had the same problem. I tried turning off automatic optimization/defragmenting and that made it way better, but still a bit slower than when I was using windows 7. To do this search for 'defragment and optimize drives', open and change the settings scheduled optimization so that 'run on a schedule' is unchecked.

I have a similar problem.

Been using Windows 10 Pro for months now with no issue and have an SSD as the system drive. I had recently run the following SSD optimisation tasks and the problems seemed to start happening after that.

  • Turned off indexing
  • Turned off the drive optimisation/defragmentation
  • Ensured TRIM was enabled

I have tried turning indexing back on but the disk usage spikes to 100% before the task can complete!

I'm going to try a fresh install and test from there.

Similar problem.  Brand new computer received April 29 2016.  128GB SSD for OS/ Programs and 2TB spinning disk.  When the system wakes from sleep, 100% Activity on the SSD from task manager, but under Disk tab on Resource monitor, 0.00 disk queue.  Several blogs but no fix.  The vendor stated this is an existing problem with Microsoft Windows 10 and SSD and suggested if reimaging the NEW SYSTEM might help.  In my case, recovering from sleep caused the issue - every time.  I disabled sleep and instead had the system hibernate (not what I needed but it's a work-around).
