Windows 8.1 upgrade fails with error code 0xd0000225

I have Windows 8.0 with Media Center installed on an HP 8510w laptop and am trying to update it to Windows 8.1.  After going to the Store and selecting the upgrade (Windows 8.1 with Media Center), it runs a long time and ends up with and error.  Clicking on the details it states: "Something happened and the Windows 8.1 couldn't be installed.  Please Try again.  Error code 0xd0000225".  There are two options; "tray Again" or "Cancel Install".  Trying again did not work.  I even rebooted and retried,  but ended up with the same error.  Here are some event log entries:

Hi sdregnier,

Thank you for the detailed information.

1.     Did you move user account directory to any other drive or partition?

2.     Are you using a 3rd party antivirus application on your computer?

I would suggest you to run the Upgrade Assistant and check.

Upgrade Assistant: FAQ.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/upgrade-assistant-download-online-faq

If you are using 3rd party antivirus application, as a work around, you can disable/uninstall antivirus application and check.

a) On your Computer screen Task Bar next to System Clock.

b) You will see the third-party Security Software Icon.

c) Click on the third-party Security Software Icon, you will see a pop up.

d) In that pop and select the option to disable, click on it.

e) Now the third-party Security Software will be disabled.

Important Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Hope this information is helpful. Please do let us know if you need further assistance, we’ll be glad to assist you.

User account directory.  It is under the standard c:\users\name\....  So no change there.  The other thing you mention is third party virus protection.  I disabled that and tried, but no good; same error.  I uninstalled it, rebooted, retried and still fails with the same error.

I ran the Windows Update diagnostics and it found several errors that it corrected.  When I reran the upgrade to Windows 8.1, it is still failing with the same error.

Where are there logs that will show more detailed information identifying the actual problem?

Okay.  Here is what I found after digging some more on the Internet.

I found information from the technet.Microsoft.com Web site.  The error log that I asked about was c:\$Windows.~BT\Panther\setuperr.log.  (I'm pretty sure that is the path.  I didn't copy it and now that the update is complete, the directory no longer exists)

Using a text editing program I searched for Error.  I found a message relating to BCDEDIT not finding the DISPLAYORDER option for the boot manager.

On my PC I have the recommended small partition for doing recovery, therefore I use the Windows Boot Manager.  I had set the default boot option so it would start Windows and then I had removed the DISPLAYORDER so the Boot Manager displayed nothing and went directly to Windows.

Well, the setup program did allow for that condition and it failed with a generic error.  Key to finding the solution was finding the log files.

I changed the Boot Manager option so that it displays the two options and waits only 5 seconds to choose the default. When I reran the update, it worked fine.  Of course, I had tried several other options before finding the logs so I had to reinstall several programs afterwards.
