Logitech C920 no longer detected in skypeforlinux 8.13.0.2

My Logitech C920 was working fine in 8.11.0.4; I saw the "A new update is available…" notification in the UI so updated via my package manager. Upon launching the new 8.13.0.2 version, my webcam could not be found. Restarting the computer didn't help, neither did uninstalling and reinstalling skypeforlinux. I have since downgraded to 8.11.0.4 and my camera is working again.

No help at all from Microsoft... great.

For those that end up here (like me) by accident, here some help.

I tried out various skype versions:

C920 webcam support tested as indicated in table below.

Version Release Size  Status

skypeforlinux_8.9.0.1_amd64.deb 2017-12-11 16:30 64M  ?

skypeforlinux_8.10.0.4_amd64.deb 2017-12-11 16:29 64M  ok

skypeforlinux_8.11.0.4_amd64.deb 2017-12-11 16:25 69M  ok

skypeforlinux_8.12.76.7_amd64.deb 2017-12-11 16:16 69M  ok

skypeforlinux_8.13.0.2_amd64.deb 2018-01-09 13:46 69M  broken

skypeforlinux_8.13.76.2_amd64.deb 2017-12-07 09:37 69M  broken

skypeforlinux_8.13.76.4_amd64.deb 2017-12-11 15:14 69M  broken

skypeforlinux_8.13.76.6_amd64.deb 2017-12-15 07:18 69M  broken

skypeforlinux_8.13.76.8_amd64.deb 2018-01-04 08:56 69M  broken

To remove the current skypeforlinux in ubuntu, download one of the versions marked OK above and type

wget "https://repo.skype.com/deb/pool/main/s/skypeforlinux/skypeforlinux_8.12.76.7_amd64.deb"

sudo killall skypeforlinux

sudo dpkg -r skypeforlinux

sudo dpkg -i skypeforlinux_8.12.76.7_amd64.deb

Start skype. The C920 should work fine now.

This was tested in ubuntu 18.04 LTS alpha1, kernel 4.13.0-25-generic. However this should work as well in 16.04.

I did notice a funny uvcvideo message that was not there in previous kernels (4.10) , if my memory serves correctly:

[   14.346210] uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.00 device HD Pro Webcam C920 (046d:082d)
[   14.346803] uvcvideo 1-1.4:1.0: Entity type for entity Processing 3 was not initialized!

[   14.346808] uvcvideo 1-1.4:1.0: Entity type for entity Extension 10 was not initialized!
[   14.346809] uvcvideo 1-1.4:1.0: Entity type for entity Extension 11 was not initialized!
[   14.346897] usbcore: registered new interface driver uvcvideo
Not sure, if this is related.

Webcam works fine in the current kernel 4.13.0-25 generic, cheese 3.26.0 and vlc 3.0.0-rc4.
