More info on the update to Skype version 8

Hello, Skype community! We hope you're all enjoying the latest updates to Skype version 8 for desktop, mobile, and tablet devices. We wanted to share a few more details on the ongoing update to Skype version 8 to keep you up to speed on the latest info.

Why update everyone to Skype version 8?

The update from version 7 to version 8 allows us to unify the experience of using Skype across all desktop and mobile platforms. Unlike older versions, all version 8 applications are optimized to work in conjunction with our modern, mobile-friendly cloud services architecture, which has allowed us to deliver features such as video messaging and mobile group video calling over the past couple years.  With a unified experience and with all applications now no longer having to support legacy architecture, our engineering teams can deliver features and quality improvements to customers much more quickly.

What can you expect over the next several months?

  • We're sending an email to people still using older Skype versions so they know the update is coming. We published a blog post and have communicated the change in this forum, but we want to be sure everyone who might be impacted by this change is well-informed.  We expect everyone who might be impacted to receive an email notification by the end of October.
  • Then we'll start requiring people to update to Skype version 8 in waves over the next several months. Not everyone will be required to update at once.
    • Desktop: First wave begins on 11/1/2018
    • Mobile devices and tablets: First wave begins on 11/15/2018
  • We strongly recommend you update now, prior to being required to do so, to avoid any interruption in service. Find out how to download the latest Skype versions here.
  • Skype version 14 is available for Windows 10 PCs in the Microsoft Store for Skype Insiders. It is based on version 8, but has additional features to better integrate with the platform. You can run version 8 for desktop and version 14 for Windows 10 PCs at the same time on your PC. We'll keep releasing updates to version 14 as we update version 8.
  • We'll continue to update Skype version 8 and version 14 based on your feedback and communicate what's changing as we go.

And how, exactly, will we be able to choose our wave?  Surely you're going to allow people to defer to a later wave if they want, right?

You've barely begun the feature migration at this point, and Nov 1 is one month away. It's simply not going to be ready by then, and that's based on looking at the latest Insider/Preview builds (i.e. what the public will have in November). Skype 14 doesn't even have a tray icon yet (you close the window, its gone)!

"Several months" after November should be the earliest consideration for the first wave, not the last splash.

You should have waited for the work to actually be largely complete before making such an announcement. This seems like an unforced error and not a lesson learned.

Hello, rseiler! Thanks for the feedback.

There is currently no plan to allow people to choose their wave.

We're an agile team, we'll continue to make incremental improvements to the Skype experience based on customer feedback. We'll keep you updated here as we go...

Just wanted to say thanks for the increased visibility!

I'm using the MS Store Insider version (14.21.93.0) and things have definitely been improving.

I appreciate the surveys and feedback you request within the app and will continue to send feedback.

Will Skype 8 eventually add support for full-screen function as Classic Skype has?  Also please bring back the ability to not only re-size the window showing the outgoing video, but also to display the FULL IMAGE regardless of screen ratio, for both incoming and outgoing video instead of cropping it?

Dear Skype Teams,

Quite frankly you put the cart before the horse, I am saddened you brought us here without a dialogue! #Engage

This kind of rollout and update regime will lose users! Please reconsider <3

Split View:
I NEED to have conversations in multiple windows. I NEVER want to accidentally post a link in the wrong window when talking to multiple contacts. I often IM with many people at once. I moderate on social chat/IRC and I am forever context switching. If we are forced to have only one chat window active at once, then I am out and I cannot function.

Advanced Audio Controls:
Nobody seems to be talking about this, but the quality of audio controls in the newer versions is a joke compared to the current version. Make it work how Windows works and make the UI & UX match Windows please. I use VoiceMeeter Banana to augment my windows audio controls and need  a consistent and flexible interface for sending audio to a specific channel/device.

Emoji & Emoticon Size:
Let's not make them too big right ?

A Few Points for the Dev Teams:
1. Add all the features of the current version and remove only the ones that don't make sense

2. Respect the power user. We have multiple monitors . I personally have between two and five depending on my activities and location and use them for modal activities!

3. Canvas for features or Discord will eat your lunch.

4. Don't imagine that community loyalty is unending.

5. Consider 'Faking' a legacy view for those who cannot deal with a forced change in workflow and actions as developers can.

6. Talk to the over 50s (not me), but who I support), talk to the Geeks, talk to the Jane Doe's of this world and NEVER rely on programme managers or project leads to steer a project.

7. Evolve don't revolutionise, especially when you need to grow your user base, not shrink it.
8. AB test until the cows come home, but don't ignore the loyal influencers

9. Respect the needs of podcasters and streamers - they will share, promote and 'sell' new features and ideas to their friends and family.

10. Never me-too a feature until it is piloted with AB/focus groups.

11. Ask US what features we need for *** sake, we love the service, it is better than most and we will remain. Some people have long memories and came from MSN Messenger and AIM. We are your advocates going forward.

Much respect

i just want a working skype program for my vista , as skype 8 don't , why just not keep skype 7 active as a stand alone program ? why i should lose the opportunity to talk with family and friends just because can't upgrade my pc or purchase a new one ? i'm very disappointed...

We're definitely moving forward with the update, MrOak.

We're as excited as you are to see Skype appeal to both long time users and people who are new to the platform.

Have you had a chance to try the new Skype UserVoice site? We're hoping passionate Skypers like you share your ideas for the future of Skype there...not just the feature parity and quality work. Dream big, the entire team is watching.
