Multi-level numbering in Word Online

Hello, I have a problem with multi-level numbering headers in Word Online.

I can create numbering in desktop Office program like:

1. Header One

  1.1. Subheader

  1.2. Subheader

    1.2.a) Sub-subheader

And everything is OK. But if I upload it to OneDrive and update the file in Word Online the numbering is automatically changed to:

1. Header

  1. Subheader

  2. Subheader

    a) Sub-subheader

Is it possible to prevent this behaviour?

Answer

Hello Tonda,

Welcome to Microsoft Community and thank you for your feedback!

Currently Word Online does not support rendering of multi-level lists. That is, only the lowest level of each
multi-level list item is displayed in the Online product. This is mainly due to a limitation on how browsers render list items.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to prevent this behavior at the moment.

Having said that, we are currently working on a new design which will fully render multi-level lists in Word Online. This new design is expected to be available to our customers within the next two months.

I hope this helps. Thank you again for your feedback, and please feel free to let us know if you have any other questions.

Regards,
