Duplicate program icons in taskbar

This is a problem that started for me after using build 10130 for a couple of weeks and it's still present after upgrading to 10158. Long story short, while most programs don't have a problem being pinned to my taskbar, Skype and iTunes get duplicated if I have them pinned and running. By duplicated, I mean there's 2 icons, one for the pinned program and second for the actual, running program.

The current solution to this problem is, obviously, to keep both programs unpinned and just keep them running until the PC is restarted, at which point they need to be started again and put back in its place I'm used to having them on my taskbar. But I'd like to know if there's a way to fix this in a way that actually lets me keep these programs pinned.

Hi,

Thank you for being a part of Windows 10 Technical Preview testing.

As the issue occur only with Skype and iTunes, I would suggest you to uninstall and re-install Skype and iTunes and see if that helps.

a. Right click on Start menu and select Control Panel.
b. Click on the Programs and Features.
c. Right click on
Skype and select uninstall.

Note: Repeat the same steps for iTunes uninstalling iTunes.

Once you uninstall the program, re-install programs.

Hope this helps. Let us know if you have any other issues with Windows in future.

This fixed the problem for Skype, but iTunes still shows two icons when pinned and running. I've tried restarting Windows after uninstalling both programs just to be sure, but yeah, iTunes is still causing problems.

Since I got an email yesterday asking me if the problem has been solved, I figured it might be worth a try replying with - no. The problem is still there.

With iTunes running, these 3 programs are shown as running in Details tab

In the Processes tab, under running apps, iTunes itself is only shown as running once

So this doesn't seem to be an issue of actually having two processes running at the same time.

I'd also like to add that I've already upgraded to build 10240 where this issue is still present.

This is not an issue that only exists with iTunes. There have been multiple reports for multiple programs in different Windows versions over the years, and a fix has never been released. Currently my Skype, Battle.net and Xamarin applications all have duplicate icons on my taskbar. I also have friend who had the same issue with Spotify. This is ridiculous, I have spent the last 2-3 hours searching online for a fix and all I find are people who want a fix (some of these people from several years ago running Windows 7), and unfortunately we still have not got one.

The ironic part about the duplicate Skype icon is it only occurs when you download it via the Get Skype app that comes with Windows 10, but when you install it from the website, it is fine.

Even I have been facing the exactly same issue since beta build 9801 of Win 10.

I have done clean install of new builds of Windows 10, but the problem has never been fixed since then. I have also tried pinning/unpinning, uninstalling/reinstalling everything I could found on internet to fix this but the issue still remains.

I hope Microsoft fix this issue at the earliest now.
