Xbox Slim will turn off at random...

It will work for 3 minutes, then randomly turn off.  I will do this about three times, it will turn on right after it shuts off, no unusual lights, and the power brick remains normal.  After the third time, the xbox will just all of a sudden stay on.  I searched all over, and i have yet to see this problem.  I was curious if it seems to be something wrong with the xbox itself, i got a warranty with Gamestop, they said i could just bring it in and ill get a different one.  Figured id ask first if it was something fixable as in a setting or not.  I did turn the auto off setting.  I just found it rather unusual to do it a couple times, then all of a sudden work, it is quite annoying since sometimes my settings will go back to normal 480p or whatever it is, and ill go back 3 times to change it to 720.

Any help is much appreciated.  I might just bring it back and trade it for a new one either way.

There a few things to check for. First of all, is the console in a well-ventilated environment? Make sure the fans and ports are not obstructed, and that the console has room to 'breathe.'

Secondly, you may want to try the console in a different room and outlet. Make sure the console isn't connected through a surge protector.

If neither of those resolve the issue, I suggest taking Gamestop up on that exchange.

Yeah, i went to another tv to try.  Its awkward it works after it shuts off three times, but I am a tad worried something worse will come out of it, plus i guess im still on the 30 day warranty, let alone the year warranty i bought for it.  It definitely has enough space though, it sits right next to my ps3, both standing up, and both with like a foot of space on both sides.

Curious though, wouldn't a surge protector be better for it?  Ive been running systems off the surge all the time, and never had an issue such as this...

For best results, I don't recommend running the console through a surge protector. If you can still exchange it at the store, I recommend doing som just to avoid any potential future issues.

Thank God, thought I would go crazy. This just started to happen to me yesterday. Mine doesn't turn back on though, except it did it once. It'll occasionally revert back to 480p, which I switch it back to 1080i. I did, however, notice it takes longer to shut off if I leave the disc tray open. Sometimes it won't even turn off if I'm doing something on it with the ray open. If there is any more info on how to fix this (other than giving it to Microsoft for a month), that would be great!

Good to know that I'm not alone on this issue, my xbox skim has the exact same issue including the resolution reverting to 480p, I tried everything to no avail, Mine will turn on and off at random at any time of the day, sometimes the power button and eject button will not work at all. I hope this forum finds a solution to this problem ASAP.

I have been lead to believe that it is a self defence mechanism to prevent your 360 from overheating, i have not had this verified yet, if i find anything else out i will post back here...

My xbox 360 slim will do something similar. It seems to beep at random times, the beep sound is the same as the eject or on/off sound. Most of the time the xbox will stay on and have no problems however sometimes it will just turn off or the disk tray will open. I really want to know what is causing this! Haha. If the brick is not unplugged then the xbox will turn itself on and open the disk tray by itself, also randomly. The most worrying thing for me is that it makes the noise at random in and out of game play and seems to be harmless except for the few times its opened the disk drive.
