Xbox 360 Slim freezing after playing for 5 minutes

I've had my Xbox since May 2011. The warranty ran out.

Anyway, my Xbox has been freezing for no reason. Sometimes while just booting up, sometimes while signing in right after booting up. A lot of the time while playing a game; whether it be the main menu after turning it on or after playing for 10 minutes. Every time it freezes while I'm actually in the middle of playing a game I heard the disc spinning very loudly and rapidly in the Xbox. I always feel the air vent and it feels hot, but not that hot. I've played with my Xbox standing vertically and horizontally, tried without my hard drive, cleared the system cache, optimized my LIVE connection, played without being connected to LIVE at all, I've tried every single solution I've seen online. However, yesterday I played for about two and a half hours without freezing. Today, though, it returned to normal and froze just like it did before.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

Do you have any other storage devices connected other than the hard drive?

Make sure there are no accessories connected to the console such as flash drives, any USB device, kinect or keyboard. If it is still freezing with out any attached devices and clearing your cache hasn't worked you might have to contact support or request that they contact you in order to get a proper step by step directions to possibly trouble shoot your problem

Are you sure that you play in a cool ventilated room ? Because I got mine in May last year as well and still no problems.

I would try and get a fan for your 360. Gamestop has some different models

Cooling Systems are not advised. The 360 S fan are perfectly capable of cooling. Using another fan of overlap doesn't help it at all. The original models triple fan makes it even hotter.

There might be some title updates stored in the memory area on your system that might be corrupted. The game studios have the capability to store title updates outside the system cache so make sure that the files are properly saved.

To do this go to:

System, Storage, choose your primary memory device (hard drive)  and select Games and Apps. Now select the games that have the problem and look for a yellow warning sign. That means that the content is corrupted or incomplete. Delete it and return to Xbox Dashboard.

If you say it's well ventilated and removing harddrive didn't fix it then I'm afraid the only thing left to do might be a repair order...

Interesting, because my system has been freezing for the last 3 years and I have always performed the clearing of cache to resolve it - until recently.  About 6 months ago, the freezing was occurring much more frequently to the point where now the system last less than 5 minutes before it freezes.  Yesterday I spoke with Hardware Support and I was advised to write here because of my dissatisfaction with the solution.

Microsoft is suggesting that I send in my system for repairs and it will cost me around $120 to do repair.  My issue is that from the day that I had bought my original Xbox, there have been issues - starting with the red ring of death.  Microsoft replaced my system then, but with a refurbished one.  That one lasted less than 6 months and I had to call in again and to which Microsoft replaced it with yet another refurbished system (the one I have today).  My point is: I don't believe that I should be paying for the cost of repairs for this system  and it does not matter that the warranty has run out.  I bought an original Xbox - this system was defective  - Microsoft has never replaced the system with a brand new one and so I am left to pay the price for this?  How is this right - ethically or morally?  I am hoping that you will be able to resolve this for me.  I had purchased a 250 GB hardrive recently as well and so I am not impressed that the system has failed yet again.  I am an annual subscriber to Xbox live and I am seriously considering leaving this platform as a result of the poor service received from Microsoft.  Look forward to hearing from you.

By the way, the person I spoke to yesterday was Ray and the reference number for him is [mod removed]

Thanks for your consideration.

Hey there, Eyemgr84u. I'm very sorry to hear about your situation. Unfortunately I believe you may have been slightly mislead as to the proper course of action here. If you spoke with Hardware Support and you determined together that your console needs a repair, then you'll need to send it in for a repair in order to get the issue resolved. For guidance about how to get your console repaired, I would recommend taking a look at this support article titled "How to get your Xbox product repaired."

If you'd like to offer feedback about your experience, I would encourage you to make a post in the Console Feedback Forum here: http://forums.xbox.com/xbox_forums/xbox_feedback/f/2604.aspx.  These are monitored forums and will make sure that your voice is heard by the optimal audience. Thank you and please let us know if we can assist you further.

Have you tried positioning the XBOX differently? for example placing it vertically instead of horizontally. you might be over heating it
