Huge bandwidth usage

I recently pluged my xbox360 to the internet and subscribe to Xbox Live and since then, my bandwith usage went up a lot. I though gaming or maybe using some apps could be the problem but this morning i let my xbox360 open between 6 and 7h, idle in the home menu doing nothing.

I went to see the bandwhith usage on my internet provider  site for this hour and it was over 1g. So there is definitely something wrong but i can't figure out what in my configuration could be the problem....

Any clue?

Thanks

Is that 1gb for just one hour or for 6hours?

If its just one hour usage then that sounds odd.

But if its 6 hours then it could be right as when the xbox is connected to live it does constantly use a small amount of bandwidth. Over 6hours it could use 1gb although not 100% sure.

I notice there are often video ads on the dashboard. If these are being regularly streamed then the bandwidth could well add up to 1gb over a few hours.

Yes 1g in just 1h, i figured too there is ads in the home menu, but there's no way it should take that much bandwith. Even many hours, staying in the menu.

Maybe i'm wrong and it's normal but if so it's a lot for just some ads....

I unpluged my xbox360 and now it's just back to normal, 20-50megs in the following hour, browsing the web, some videos download ... etc...

You should contact your internet provider and have them run some tests.

Also go to a speed test site (like speedtest.net) and make sure that your console is actually eating that much data.

The console should barely make a dent.

Are you using a router that isn't password protected?

If so, there is a high chance that someone is piggy backing off of your wifi and using it to download and stream videos.

My XBOX is normally on all day. Either someone is watching Netflix or Vudu or I get home and play something for a while. Hell, last weekend I watched 2 seasons of a show and my usage was still pretty low.

Another thing that could cause high usage is when you stream movies from certain sites and you are forced to refresh constantly.

My neighbor had an issue similar to that. He was on a console watching a stream from an unauthorized site that he shouldn't have been watching and the movie would keep stopping a refreshing. It turned out that each time the movie stopped and restarted, it would add the entire file size to usage limits. He went over his limit in 1 day because of 1 movie.

My wifi router is password protected and if someone was connecting to it other than me, Anyway i already check in my router admin pannel to see what was connecting to it and everything is fine. Also  the same amount of bandwith usage would shows up when i  disconnect my xbox fomr the internet, which it's not the case. Same with the refreshing of a stream site. I'm not visiting stream site and just letting my xbox open idle did the 1g transfert. I could contact my my internet provider but not sure they will be able to tell me exactly what is doing this, worth a try but since it seems more of a xbox 360 related problem, i went here first.

Hi!

Could it be that it is monitoring your total Internet downlink/uplink traffic?

Are you monitoring in real-time? If so, post up the avarage uplink/downlink in KB/s

no i'm not, i'm using a web tool that of my provider that shows up the upload/download total by day and hour. It doesn't show any more details than that and i call the tech services and they can't do much either.

I'm not sure how i could monitor it, since my xbox360 is plug to my router but i don't see any tool to monitor the trafic in th admin tool of my router. i've never done this so i guess i'll have to figure it out to find what's the problem.

1gb in one hour does sound odd. Even with video ads I cant see it using that much.

Do you use cloud storage?

My usage is quite high as well. About 150gb a month. Mostly from xbox.

Ive found that cloud storage uses a lot of bandwidth. In a couple of days I can have over 1GB in uploads alone. This is from playing skyrim as that can be 10mb a save. Then every time I start skyrim the saves are redownloaded. There are 3 gold profiles on my xbox all using the cloud and playing skyrim so all the bandwidth adds up.
