Gamertag / Windows Live ID Expiry

I have a Gamertag that I wish to keep using but it is attached to a closed Windows Live ID. I have called Xbox Support but they need to Windows Live ID to be active in order to administrate the account.

Will the Gamertag be released into the pool of available Gamertags now that the Windows Live ID it is attached to has been deactivated? If so, how long after the Windows Live ID is closed will the Gamertag be released?

The gamertags Microsoft started releasing are only from the original Xbox. They are not currently releasing any from the 360.

Is that to say that even if a Windows Live ID is closed, the associated Gamertag is never available to register again? I called Xbox Support and they stated that once the Windows Live ID was removed, the Gamertag should be available to register. I just wanted to know what the timeframe was.

As far as I know, the gamertag is still attached to the WLID even if the ID is closed. So it wouldn't be freed up unless you were able to sign into that account and change the gamertag.

Can anyone else confirm that this is the case?

Windows Live ID support have said that my Windows Live ID is in its recycle period. Does that mean that the Gamertag will be released after this period?

What happens when you try to recover the profile with the WLID and password? Do you get an error?
