Connecting Xbox 360 to a DLNA NAS server

I've just started getting into the Xbox, and I've just installed all the latest updates on it, I'm a little green behind the ears so sorry if my question is in the wrong forum section.

I am  trying to connect the Xbox to my Synology NAS server running what I believe is a DLNA service but it could be DMA, but for the life of me cannot see under the menu how to do this?

Surprisingly I've found nothing on-line either from what I can see, I'm sure the Xbox is capable though because as there's plenty of stuff about how to set up the Synology so the Xbox can connect to it but I can't find anything on where the settings are on the Xbox.

Could some one please point me in the right direction ... ?

The only storage devices you would be able to use wuth your console are the Microsoft approved one listed here: USB flash drive, MS HDD's and third party external HHD's but regardless of the size it would only get formatted to the 16Gb limit.

See if the Synology device shows up here

Stream media to your Xbox 360 console - Xbox.com - Xbox.com

support.xbox.com/.../media

Step 3: Play or view media

Press the Guide button on your controller, go to Media, and select either Music Player or Video Player depending on the type of media you want to play.

Select the name of your computer.

Note If the name of your computer is not listed, select Computer and then Test Connection.

Select the item you want to play or view.

Thanks murph17, that's the information I was looking for and couldn't find I will try it out later.

Yeah they got an official list and it looks like arm twisted round there back they've had provide DLNA as not to seem so backwards they should be put in a home for happy people.

Its a shame Microsoft make media streaming such a grey area

Yeah the xbox can stream media from a NAS, too many people reporting they got it setup, but no they wont make it easy unless you do it from another bit of their kit  .. sigh ... good for them not for me.

uPnP and DLNA are well established, I so wanted a PS3 but too many of my friends on xbox, either that or put the extra money towards a DLNA TV or even apple TV is pretty amazing.

OK enough of the rant in a vain hope that just maybe Redmond's kid will read this and suggest to his dad sly marketing strategies are sooooo 20th century.

I'll post the findings back when I know more :)

OK, its all up and running and was much easier than I thought it would be.

So here's how to do it if you've got a Synology, hope it helps someone!

.

.

The Media server is a package preinstalled on a Synology running DSMv4.

Open up 'Package Center' and run 'Media Server'

.

The media service broadcasts over UDP using an anonymous account, which translated means you don't have to log in making it easily accessible to all the devices on your LAN and you won't be able to pick up the media streaming service outside of your home network.

.

Normally as its goes with the Synology you would next assign application rights through the 'Application Portal' this isn't needed with the Media Server app, I did read somewhere that the guest account had to be enabled, not the case I found with DSM v4.0-2198 though.

.

If you keep tight a firewall then you'll need to add the firewall rules, they are already preconfigured just put tick boxes in 'DLNA/UPnP media server 50002,50001 TCP' and 'DLNA/UPnP media server 1900 UDP'

.

You can configure the Media Server service through the Synology start button using the Media Server applet but I didn't need to do any extra configuration as it worked out of the box.

.

The only other configuration I did was on my router, pretty much every home router has something to configure with uPnP, on my router I enabled it and set the transmission packet to every 5 mins.

And that was it, works really well and all my hard labour of hours spent ripping DVDs into MP4 has paid off... at least I think, the xbox gives a real barebones view and I do wonder if it would have been quicker just to be a disc on a drive when I wanted to watch it ;-)
