Windows XP Operating system disk recovery freezes at "please wait"

I have a 5 year old gateway laptop that recently got a Blue Screen Of Death. I backed up all the data already. When I boot from the Operating systems Disk, it tells me "press R for recovery options" so I press R, then it loads up all the way [the bar fills up] till the 'Please Wait' then freezes. Help!

update: I wanna thank everybody helped me, especially elizabeth because she stuck w/ me.

a recap of what i did: i burned memtest on a blank cd, booted it from that cd on my bad computer, ran the memtest, and saw that my memory had a whole bunch of errors.

Then i went online & found a new ram (same size, and i looked my model # specifically.) and ordered it

I replaced my old ram chip w/ my new one & now it works just like it was before it broke. I didnt even have to do a recovery or installation of xp. thanks again

Answer

I'd say one of three things... Bad CD-Rom, bad windows CD, or bad hard drive.  Oh,
add one more thing, bad memory.

You should run some diagnostics on your RAM and surface tests on your hard drive
before attempting the install.  If those tests don't turn up any thing, then suspect
a bad cd-rom drive, or bad disc.  I would suspect a bad cd-rom drive over the bad
disc.

Theres very little chance that windows setup would fail at this point on a freshly
formatted hard drive, unless there was some form of bad hardware/cd.

in step 4 of above page is a list of hard drive manufacturers and some tests you can download.

I do not know if you can test the drive in the notebook, you will have to look at the overview of the one that matches your harddrive to see how to run it.
