Troubleshooting Disk Defragmenting

My computer will not complete disk defragmentation. It will open up and it says defragmenting disk, I have left it on overnight and it still wont complete it. What is the problem and what can I do to fix it??

Hi,

From the COMMAND prompt of your Boot Disk or Recovery (if your System maker provided one) run these
(you can run them in windows however they are more efficient from the boot disk prompt so I will list both
ways). If needed you can borrow a friend's disk (same 32 or 64 bit needed) as they are not copy protected.
The System maker will usually sell the physical disks cheap since you already own Windows. Or you can
make a Repair Disk as indicated below.

Command Prompt of a Boot Disk or Recovery Options/Environment

chkdsk /f /r

REBOOT

sfc /scannow

REBOOT

The above method is better if possible.

Inside Windows - Regular or Safe Mode

Run checkdisk - schedule it to run at next start and then Apply OK your way out then restart.
