explorer.exe unknown error when i open my computer

Hi, I have windows 8, I'm experiencing a problem with explorer.exe. when I open my computer, it directs me to the start menu, then without doing anything, it opens the desktop and an unidentified error shows up. it just says explorer.exe with the exclamation point sign.
can someone help me? I'm not much of a techie kind of person. and also, I've tried system scan using Norton antivirus as well as Microsoft, but both did not detect any issues. so I guess the problem might have something to do with the registry. but I have NOOOOO idea how to fix it. thanks
