Not able to set black color as the default print color on my printer

Original Title: HP computer with Windows 8 connected to an HP Officejet 4500 G510n-z printer

I have a new HP computer, with Windows 8 software.  It is connected to "HP Officejet 4500 G510n-z" printer.  I am unable to set the defualt for printing as; "black only."  The best I can do is set it for "Grayscale."  When I print a document, without changing the setting under the title: "preferences," to grayscale, the doument prints in color.  I would like to be able to set it for "black only" as the default setting.  Included in the printers depicted in the control panel, appears one entitled:  "HPeprint."  I have also found a reference to this printer in the list of printers that appears when I open up the icon: "Devices," which appears on the right side of the screen when I move the curser to the right-bottom of the screen.  When I select this printer, the box for color reads: "color."  When I click on it the word "grayscale" appears as an alternative.  After I select this option, and try to print, an error message comes up.  Do you have an explanation for what is happening, and how I can completely set the color option for my printer as: black only?

Hi Robert,

Welcome to Microsoft Community and thank you for providing us an opportunity to assist you on this issue.

From the description of the issue, it looks like you are unable to select black as the default color for the HP Officejet 4500 G510n-z printer.

I would like to gather some information in context of this issue:

1) Are you able to get the option to select black color as the default color under Preference option?
2) Did you make any changes to the computer prior to this issue?
3) Are the drivers for the printer up-to –date?

If the driver for the printer’ HP Officejet 4500 G510n-z’ is not up-to-date, then, Let’s try and update the driver from the manufacturer website. Perhaps, it may resolve this issue.

Let’s follow the methods:

Method 1:

You may refer to the link to download the latest printer driver for Windows 8 and install the driver on the computer:

Follow the steps to uninstall the current version of the printer driver that is installed currently and then install the latest driver:

a) Press Windows and x key together and click on Device Manager.
b) Locate the Printer driver.
c) Right click on Printer driver and click on the Uninstall.
d) Follow the onscreen instructions to uninstall the driver.
e) Navigate to the folder which contains the latest driver for the printer that you have downloaded.
f) Locate the setup file of the latest driver and double click on it to install the driver.

After installing the latest driver, please check if you can access an option to select black as the default color.

Method 2:

If updating the drivers does not help, you may uninstall the driver and then reinstall it again. Check if it helps.

Follow the steps to do so:

a) Press Windows and x key together and click on Device Manager.
b) Locate the Printer driver.
