how do i fix/repair my cd/dvd driver in windows 8?

I need help to figure out why I can not load or rather, why WINDOWS can not load the correct drivers for my cd/dvd player.  I am running win8 on one HD and win7 on a different HD and win7 will recognize the player, but win 8 won't.  It was working probably two weeks ago (I don't use it that often) and it just stopped.  I even bought a new cd/dvd player with all the drivers and downloaded updates from Plextor web site . . . Nothing works! Works great for win7 however, I want it to work (and it should work) on win8. I've tried the 'upper and lower filters with-in regedit however, I don't know what the values should be. The disk with the win8 was new when win8 version was installed. And of course I've tried to uninstall/search for newer drivers, but nothing seems to help.  So, if anyone could assist me I'd be grateful.  Thanks in advance.

Can you check the following registry key?:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

At that registry key, in the right window, is there, under "Name", either an UpperFilters or LowerFilters value?

If so, for each of the UpperFilters and/or LowerFilters value, what is listed under "Data"?

(By default there is no UpperFilters or LowerFilters value at that registry key).

First, thanks for the reply. There is no upperfilter; Lowerfilter under Data is: PxHIpa64. I think I mentioned I've installed a Plextor DVD; MDL PX-891SA.

The PxHIpa64 is most likely invalid so try removing the  PxHIpa64 entry.

To remove the PxHIpa64 entry double-click LowerFilters and, under Value data, remove PxHIpa64 > OK

Create a system restore point beforehand and restart the computer after.

Try the Fixit tools here as and where they relate to CD problems.

Hi,

The  PxHIpa64 is sometimes related to older Roxio\Sonic software, and a lot of times after an update, or even their installation, you CD\DVD drives will vanish...

Installing PxEngine_4.18.16a downloaded from this link will solve the problem if deleting the filter does not, or causes another problem.
