Brother MFC-J835DW All-in-One Printer Kernel-mode Error on Install to 64 bit Windows 8

Brother has a Windows 8 driver for the 64 bit machine, but it will not install because Windows 8 disallows the installation of a kernel-mode driver. Brother tells me that Microsoft or HP has to fix the problem by allowing the kernel-mode driver to be installed. I'm surprised that Brother would develop a kernel-mode driver, so I suspect a problem with the driver setup. Regardless, is there a work-around to install this driver?

I have tried changing policies related to kernal mode drivers, but they do not seem relevant for Windows 8.

The system is a HP laptop with Cintrino Processor. The system has been running 64 bit Windows 7 for several years without any problems. This is last remaining problem in my upgrade to Window 8. I hope someone will help.

Thanks, Fred

Thank you for responding to my plea for help, Santhosh.

To answer your questions:

1.       How are you trying to install the printer drivers?

Since the Brother driver CD that came with the printer did not support Windows 8, I went to the manufacture’s web site and downloaded the latest Windows 8 compatible 64 bit driver. I downloaded and installed this driver several times always getting the same kernel mode error as the printer driver was being configured. The scanner and fax drivers seem to load fine, and, indeed, the scanner even works from the laptop. Additionally, I successfully downloaded the 64 bit driver for my Windows 7 Desktop using the same method, and it is installed and working just fine. Subsequently, I called Brother Solution Center and the tech there walked me through the download and install process described above. Not surprisingly, it resulted in the same kernel mode error in the same location. I have tried to use the Brother's uninstall for the driver and then reinstall. I have tried to manually install the driver from the device manager. I have tried to change compatibility mode and install the driver. Always the same error: "Windows can't install the Brother MFC-J835DW Printer kernel-mode print driver. To obtain a driver that is compatible with the version of Windows you are running, contact the manufacturer."

2.       At what stage, exactly, do you get the error message?

The error occurs when the printer driver is being setup. After the error, the installer continues to run and finishes installing the scanner driver, the fax driver and utilities.

Santhosh, I have tried everything you have suggested and more. I noticed on the retailer’s reviews for the printer that a couple of other folks are having the same problem. I am tempted to try a clean install of Windows 8 to see if this will fix the problem, but this thought gives me a chill.

Any more suggestions would be appreciated.

Today, I did a clean install of x64 Windows 8 onto a clone disk that had x64 Windows 7 installed. The bottom line is that the Brother MFC-J835DW Printer installed and printed just fine. I put my Upgrade x64 Window 8 disk back into the machine and have been trying for hours to try to figure out what could be in there to cause the Brother driver installation to fail. I have run CCleaner, Brother remove program, and uninstall of the Brother software. I cannot get around the error. I notice with Regedit that there are still a lot of Brother entries in the registry even after everything should be removed. Maybe the culprit is one of these entries. I have run Chkdsk too, and the results are clean. I really don't want to do a clean install. I hope someone will have a suggestion as to what could cause this driver install error.

Thanks, Fred

After thinking about my situation, I decided to go with the clean install of Windows 8. The upgrade install was using a registry that started many years ago with Vista. The amount of junk accumulated over the years has probably led to this problem, and I don't know enough to ferret out the exact cause.

A clean install is the solution for this problem.

Thanks, Fred

A clean install may have been the resolution. However, it is not the solution. I am going through the same issues on 2 out of 3 Windows 8 machines. So frustrating.... I have made the calls and read the forums. My issue was in December / January 2013 and I waited until March 1st until brother released Windows 8 drivers.

Exact same issues however I am working with a Brother 9840CDW .

I wish there was a true solution to this. Yes your method worked but it isn't the best practice in a business environment.

You are right, and I feel for your frustration. I should have written that the clean install was the work around that I used. I really hate problems like this because of finger pointing. If you find the TRUE solution, I hope you will post it back here.

Good luck,

Fred

As an FYI to other who stumble upon this thread, I tried every option I could find before trying the clean install since that was something I didn't want to take on, myself.  I had an uber techie windows expert come and spend three hours trying everything, then doing the clean install and when that still didn't work he upgraded to a more powerful version of Win 8 to see if he could get more control over things since nothing was working (the back end settinsg were more restrictive then other versions).  That didn't work either.  And, I kid you not, this guy doesn't get stumped.

So.

I eventually gave up and moved the printer to my office where I still have win 7... and it works flawlessly. Seeing as how Brother told me it's an issue they had heard from numerous Win 8 users (but don't think is across the board... not sure how they know...) I'm of the opinion that it'll be up to Brother to create something that works right and hope that they do so.  I did get an e-mail from them this week saying they have an updated option available (connected to my support call) but didn't follow up since it's no longer pertinent.

In summary, until Brother updates their drivers (which hopefully they are now doing) I'd not waste too much time trying to make your printer be compatible with win 8.

Hey everyone,
I had the same problem listed here where I could not install my new Brother printer.  I was getting the same kernel-mode driver error.  I contacted Brother and they told me it was a problem with Windows 8 and I needed to call Microsoft.  The rep even said that they have gotten several calls about this issue.  I find it very frustrating that Brother would blame Microsoft for their printer not installing.  Isn't it Brother's job to make their printer compatible.

Anyways, after several hours of frustration, I finally came up with a workaround for my problem.  It may not work for everyone, but I figured I would post it.... hopefully able to help someone.

I have a desktop and a laptop.... both running Windows 8.  The printer installed without a problem on the desktop.  The problem was with my laptop.  I changed my network settings and enabled printer sharing from my desktop.  I then detected and installed the shared printer from my laptop.  In doing so, the laptop asked if I wanted to install all the necessary drivers from the desktop to to laptop.  After agreeing to transfer the drivers, I went back to the "Device and Printers" installation screen to detect the printer again.  This time, I selected the original Brother printer (not the shared one).  When installing it, it asked if I wanted to use the new, installed driver that has now been transferred to my laptop.....Yes!!  After the printer was installed, I removed the shared printer..... leaving only the Brother printer installed.

I know this isn't a perfect solution, but it worked.... for me.  Reinstalling Windows 8 was not an option for me.  I would have taken the printer back to the store before I did that.

Hope it helps,
Richard

That is awesome that is the case for you. I can confirm that has worked for me as well.   I am now having issues unrelated to this thread.
After still having issues I have re installed my OS. Once re installed I was able to install my Brother w/ Windows 8 drivers successfully. No KERNEL error....go figure. :)

While now happy with no errors and a succulence install I tested it thoroughly and all was good. Documents printed in both Desktop mode and Windows 8 PDF start screen app. To make a long story short after 3 days of proper functionality; Printing within Windows 8 Start screen reader app has stop working. All other printing in desktop mode works fine.. This is the original issue I had before I started getting the Kernel mode prompt which lead me to these forums.

MY HEAD IS GOING TO EXPLODE....

Only fix I have found for this is to system restore... but it seems that after some intermittent time this will stop functioning in WIN8 PDF APP... My client prefers that app.
Again system restoring especially frequently is not a solution.

I had exactly the same problem trying to install a single Samsung mono laser printer.    I suspect that the claimed problem is not the actual problem.   Windows is still rubbish.
