Windows 7 - Error message when moving files, creating folder, moving folder, etc.

When I try to move files, make a new folder, or move a folder, save a file with a new folder, etc., I get and error message that states "Item not found", with a description of "Could not find this item", "This is no longer located in C:\.....", "Verify the item's location and try again".

At first, I thought that this was happening to just Outlook (see post below), but now I find it seems to be happening whenever I try to move a file, or save a file from any program.

This just started this week after a mass update of windows updates.  There are a large number of these, and I do not want to start uninstalling each one until I find the culprit.  Does anyone know where this issue could be coming from?

Original post on the Outlook site:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2013_release-outlook/outlook-2013-file-saving-error/aac7da67-c314-47c1-97a2-3f7848223f93?tm=1458056705261

When I try to save an attachment from Outlook (Either save as, or save all attachments), I normally make a new folder to put the files in.

We recently had a series of Windows updates yesterday, and now I get an error message whenever I try to create a folder.

This is how it goes:

In the open e-mail, I right-click on the attachments, and select "save all attachments",

In the explorer window, I navigate to where I want to save the file, and create a new folder,

  1. I type in the name of the folder, and get the following error message:

  2. Title: "Item not found"

  3. Message: "Could not find this item", "This is no longer located in C:\.....", "Verify the item's location and try again"

  4. I click the "Try Again" button and it works.

I can then select the folder and save the file.

I suspect this may be related to the latest slug of updates yesterday, but I have no idea which one.

Any idea what could be causing this?

---------------------------

As a possible place to start looking, the following updates are the only changes made to the computer during the period the error started.

This looks suspiciously like file metadata corruption. I'd run a full CHKDSK on the hard drive.

chkdsk c: /r

"CHKDSK" came back with no errors - the drive is an SSD drive

I also ran "sfc /scannow", it also came back with no errors.

I am out of ideas unless I want to just start uninstalling the updates one-by-one until I find the culprit.

I would think that Microsoft would know.

I have uninstalled all of the updates since the problem started, and that had no effect.  While this is not really conclusive that an update could have caused the problem, at least I know removing them did not help.

I also ran "sfc /scannow" after I uninstalled the updates, again, it came back with no errors.

On thing I did note, after re-installing the updates, the start-up sound wave the computer used to make, now sounds more like a warble - almost like it is being executed several times in a row, but not allowed to finish.

The error now shows up whenever I do any folder moves, or try to create a folder when saving a file.

I am wondering if anyone else has had this issue, and how they resolved it.
