OK, here's my 2 cent.

These days Microsoft sells cheap OS distros that are "flexible". Meaning it is defective at the source and supposed to be "fixed" with constant updates, themselves "flexible". Tech support is likely ran by people in remote locations with a standard series of checklists in heavy glossy paper they have to run through for every customer calling or emailing. The answers, as seen, are all standard and not guaranteed to work. And so it remains forever.....Why,...you cry?

Because 90% of the customers do not care, and do not reach your user level, they buy cheap, and when something breaks they "go to Wall Mart on Black Friday" and get a new one off the shelf for $100....(for this price to remain, someone along this chain starves or dies somewhere in the world, but that's another story).

I have two Windows laptops working perfectly, one with Win XP, (living happily with Ubuntu in the same IBM machine), arguably the best distro ever made of Windows, luckily Microsoft droped "support" for it long ago, so they don't pester me anymore about it and so it works fine. The other Win is a Win7 (I stayed away from Vista) I am using to write this message, again perfect, and I believe they'll be dropping it as well soon, and I'll be free.

I have two Win8 machines at work and had to take special measures to prevent updates and "upgrades" to Win 10, which I will never install on any machine. Microsoft is trying to follow the "you buy our product but we command the way you use it" ethos from Mac. They lack, however, the culture, knowledge, and experience to do that (which Mac has perfected over decades). They also lack a Leader (like SJ and its descendants).

So to resume: do not buy into Win 10, hold on to Win XP, Win 7 and perhaps 8, wait until Microsoft "frees" them, get control over your machines and rely on user communities to fix issues. Microsoft support does not exist as such, they try to handle customers as best satisfies stock holders and the daily stock market fluctuations. Doesn't matter if they disappear tomorrow a leave everyone hanging......

Good luck everyone.

Hi Everyone,

I bought a game on the store today and experienced this error when it came to the downloading phase. As the Microsoft guy suggested I ran this code in the terminal prior to my solution, not knowing if that had anything to do with my upcoming solution:

            Dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth

            Dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

            sfc /scannow

Anyway, this is what solved the issue for me:

1: Use your current Admin account (mine was local) to create a new local account with Admin privileges.

2: Logg out of your current Account and into the new account with Admin privileges. You will se Win10 setting up the account for the first time. As you get logged in, wait a minute or two, as this was the point where I got the message that some apps have gotten their settings reset.

3:  After I got the message I went to the store using the new Account and downloaded a free software just to verify that it was Win Store that was reset, and indeed it was. I got no Issues.

4: Logged out and back into my old Admin account to see if it was solved and i was.

Not sure if this solves your problem, but I hope it does!

Best wishes,

If you have installed software on one account such as minecraft this method will not work because you are asked to sign into your microsoft account which basically turns the whole pc account into your Microsoft one. This method does not work or make sense

I changed my secondary HDD to an SSD and when i tried downloading/reinstalling Gears of War 4 (was formerly on the HDD) from the store it said "error - see details" and details gave this text:

try that again

something went wrong

the error code is 0x80070490, in case you need it.

Came to the forum, found this post and tried both methods:

Method 1:

Step 1

nothing

Step 2

"windows store-cashe may be damaged - not resolved"

so i looked this up and it said to CMDprompt (admin) WSreset.exe, this didn't resolve the issue.

Method 2:

Scanhealth:

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 10.0.14393.0

Image Version: 10.0.14393.0

[==========================100.0%==========================] No component store corruption detected.
The operation completed successfully.

Restorehealth: (error)

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 10.0.14393.0

Image Version: 10.0.14393.0

[==                         4.5%                           ]
Error: 1726

Kan RPC niet uitvoeren. (translated: Can't execute RPC)

The DISM log file can be found at C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log

SFC /Scannow:

Beginning system scan.  This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

-------------

So there is an error in restorehealth... dunno what to do about it :) and method 1 gave "windows store-cashe may be damaged - not resolved".

whats next? :D

Try all these hints:

  1. Run the troubleshooter for Windows apps
  2. Windows Update Troubleshooter
  3. (you can just type in "Troubleshoot" in Cortana... and use the Windows default installed toos for 1) and 2)...)
  4. a) Press "Windows key + i" to open Windows 10 Settings panel. b) select System and enter App functionality and settings: here you can manage app (default) installation location. c) try to change location for an app (you can download something free from the store just for testing) for example move from C: to D: or try to uninstall some of them...
  5. in your Windows installed programs Change/Update your "Visual C++ Redistributable 2015 (x64 and x86!)"
  6. http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/15057-store-cache-clear-reset-windows-10-a.html
  7. beware of Norton AV (try to disable it): its aggressive rules and firewall may prevent the Store apps from updating, as reported by some users...

Try these hints in any order, and good luck...

Well I have no luck to. I tried both solutions.

Result: Fail

Honestly, this is the worst update like, sometimes I can't open my messenger,my brother can't open the store on his account, I mean, like BRUH, We both have a lot of empty space on our computers! And if this happens if I try to buy something that needs paying, I will literally shriek.

Solutions, more like failing plans

Don't mind that other part
