Lost windows 10 after factory reset

Hi

I have a Microsoft Surface Pro 3 with Windows 8 originally installed. I had installed windows 10 on it.

After I factory reseted my Microsoft surface Pro 3 with windows 10 installed it turned back on and got back windows 8.1

So i was wondering is this normal and is it possible to get windows 10 back?

A factory reset would go back to the original out of box state.

You need to get Windows 10 install media and use that to install Windows 10. (upgrade again)

If you don't have it already use the Media Creation tool.

You don't need a key as your device already has a Windows 10 digital licence. If asked for a key select Skip, Do this later or I do not have a key.

When you upgraded from a previous version of Windows or receive a new computer preinstalled with Windows 10, what happened is the hardware (your PC) will get a digital entitlement, where a unique signature of the computer will be stored on Microsoft Activation Servers. The Windows 7 or Windows 8 genuine license you were previously running will be exchanged for a diagnostics key.

Anytime you need to reinstall Windows 10 on that machine, just proceed to reinstall Windows 10. It will automatically reactivate.

So, there is no need to know or get a product key, if you need to reinstall Windows 10, you can use your Windows 7 or Windows 8 product key or use the reset function in Windows 10.

If you are prompted to enter a product key, click 'I don't have a key' and 'Do this later'

Download the Media Creation Tool Now

Right click the MediaCreationTool.exe file then click Run as administrator.

Note: How to verify if you downloaded or installed the Windows 10 Anniversary Update

Select the option Upgrade this PC now if you want to upgrade right away, of if you want to download a ISO image or create a bootable copy on a USB thumb drive, choose Create installation media for another PC then click Next

A new option has been added to the setup screen for users reinstalling Windows 10 on a previously installed and activated system. If your system has a Digital License attached to it, Windows 10 will automatically upgraded:

So I am using this tool to try to reinstall my windows 10. The process goes along nicely until I get to the 2nd "getting updates" where the process stalls out and hangs at 0 percent indefinitely. The longest I've let it run is overnight where no progress was made still.

Is there something that could be causing this?

If you have an internet connection to the PC then I would try it with the internet disconnected. It should install without having to check for updates, the updates can be done after Windows 10 has completed the installation.

Interesting idea. The first few steps are downloading windows 10, etc. So maybe turn off the internet connection after that. I will give it a try

I thought you had already downloaded and created media and the media was looking for updates during the install. But try it anyway, it's worth a shot.

I had windows 8.1 (after factory rest like you) for a year before I found this... If it works

i didnt do a factory reset. my computer was shut off for 6mos as i was in the hospital for several months with a kidney transplant and kidney removals. I am a Vet.
