Inaccessible Boot Device after todays Cumulative Windows 10 Update

Hi all,

some minutes ago I restarted my Windows 10 notebook after it installed the latest cumulative update for Windows 10.

After the reboot I get a BSOD with error "Inaccessible boot device".

I did not change the notebooks config.

I need to enter my bitlocker pin before the crash happens.

I tried to boot into "Safe Mode" but get the error "cannot fix the problem" or so.

Any ideas?

Regards

Ingo

additional info: it seems that NVSTOR.DLL is missing from SYSTEM32\Drivers.

Hi!

When did you get the error?

"After an update was installed"

Error after an update is installed

"Stop error doesn't let you get to the desktop"

I cannot boot into Safe Mode.

I executed dism /image:g:\ /add-driver /driver=<...path to nvraid.inf in DriverStore/FileRepository> /recurse

I executed sfc /scannot /offbootdir=g:\ /offwindir=g:\windows

No changes. I cannot restart the machine.

Regards

Ingo

Thank you for the information.

It appears that the issue started after you perform the latest Windows Cumulative Update.

If you are stuck in a Blue Screen of Death reboot loop, Windows 10 will automatically go into the Repair mode after a while. From there, use the System Restore facility to fix the issue. Click on System Restore and select a date/point before you started getting BSOD.

System Restore will restore your computer to a prior time, removing any changes made to your computer by Windows Update. It will not affect your files.

Kindly keep us posted.

Hi,

This issue may have occurred due to system conflict. To correct this, we suggest that you create an installation media and use it to perform a System restore.

On the create an installation media link, check the part where it says Using the tool to create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) to install Windows 10 on a different PC (click to show more or less information).

To perform a System Restore using the installation media, we also suggest that you check this article: Recovery options in Windows 10. On that article, proceed to the section where it says Use installation media to restore your PC.

Let us know if you need further assistance.

In this case, there isn't a system conflict.  It's caused by permissions corruption caused by the patch which can be rectified by renaming the WindowsApps folder to WindowsApps.old and then restarting the System Restore process.  There are several articles on the internet providing instructions.

We have seen a growing number of these now...we have tried:

-System Restore

-Windows Start Up repair

-CHKDSK

-SFC

-DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

-Toggling RAID vs AHCI in SATA Controller BIOS settings

-Will not boot to any variant of Safe Mode

-Renaming WindowsApps folder had no effect

LogFiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt indicates "Details: Root Cause Found: A patch is preventing the system from starting."

We believe the culprit is: KB4019472, as that was the last cumulative patch to have hit our systems, but can't confirm. We could really use some help here, running out of options besides backing up/reimaging

UPDATE!

We renamed the WindowsApps to WindowsApps.old, then booted to Win 10 USB Key to perform a system restore.

FIXED!

Testing on additional PCs now.
