ChangeIcon MFC Application has stopped working.

Since the last set up updateson 16/09/2014 for "Update for WIndows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB2976719), (KB2989647) and (KB2984006)", I have been getting an error everytime I start up my computer stating that "changeicon MFC application has stopped working". It states the issue as an "app crash" and that the relevant program is "UMonit64.exe".

I traced to program to its directory and ran all my virus/malware/etc scans on it and they all said it was fine. I then attempted to run the program and it came up with the same error that pops up on startup and a second error message saying it wasn't able to run because "ustor.dll" was missing.

I did a system restore to before I did the windows update and sure enough everything worked fine. I then ran the windows update again after restarting to complete the update the "changeicon MFC application has stopped working" error message started popping up again.

So my questions are:

1. What is UMonit64.exe/ChangeIcon Application?

2. Did my windows update cause the issue?

3. How do I stop the error message from popping up everytime I start up?

4. Do I need UMonit64.exe? I haven't noticed any programs malfunction when I click the "close program" option when the error message pops up.

5. If I do need it, should I download the missing DLL file to fix it? If so where would be a safe place to download the replacement dll file?

6. Anything else I need to know to fix the issue or whether future windows updates will fix it for me and I should just ignore it for the time being.

So, i have to restore my laptop, i did all thewindows updates and the error came back, i have reinstalled the 4.5 genesys driver update and the error was still here.

i decided to test a MMC card and the error disappeared.

After many test to understand how it works here is 2 solutions i found:

in c:/windows/syswow64

1/ if the version of Umonit64.exe is 13.x just add "ustor.dll" in the folder.

the second option is to change the version of Umonit64.exe with the 14.0.0.1

hope this will help.

I unsuccesfully tried the driver update. I removed and reinstalled it but the error message still appear. I remove all the Windows updated listed by some of you... without succes. And finally, after the Windows updated of the last week, the error message finally dissapear ! Thank you to all of you !

I had the exact issue with the KB2984006 update however it was listed as "important" in my list rather than "optional"

I unisntalled it and the problems persisted.

I then restored my c drive to the state just prior to the updates

Went back to updates, hid the KB2984006 update and installed the rest of the important ones and everything is fine now

Thanks for the tip.

Option 1 above worked for me.

This advice worked on an Asus G750M (UK build) with all microsoft updates still installed.

Updated driver found at this address...

http://station-drivers.com/download/www/genesys/Genesys_cr_4.5.0.0(www.station-drivers.com).exe

Simply download driver and run it (Should unzip the setup folder for you) Find the 'Setup' file and run it and that then should update the memory card driver to 4.5.0.0

Search your hard drive for a copy of ustor.dll (this is the mass storage device driver for windows)

Copy this and paste it in to the following folder  c:/windows/syswow64

Now shut down and restart laptop. This solved my problem so I hope this works for anyone that is struggling.

All credit should go to original poster for this solution.
