Bitlocker does not Auto-Unlock Fixed Data Drive

I have two fixed drives on my new system:

A 500 GB Samsung SSD with the OS and programs; and

A 250 GB Samsung SSD with my Dropbox and other data files.

The OS drive is encrypted with Bitlocker using Hardware Encryption and TPM+PIN+StartupKey.

The Data drive is encrypted with Bitlocker using Hardware Encryption and its current protectors are listed as:

Key Protectors:

     External Key
     Numerical Password
     Password
External Key (Required for automatic unlock)

Automatic-Unlock is listed as "Enabled."

However, when I start Windows the drive does not automatically unlock. This results in error messages from several programs that must be manually overridden. Then, I have to manually enter a password or point Bitlocker to the USB drive containing the recovery key.

I have tried disabling BDE, adding the password, re-enabling, etc. Nothing works! This seems like a textbook setup of bitlocker, but it simply refuses to unlock automatically, even though the OS drive is encrypted and the correct protectors are present.

Am I doing something wrong? Or does Auto-Unlock just not work?

Bitlocker questions are usually outside of the scope of this forum. They are usually better handled on the TechNet forum https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home

I assume you set up auto unlock using the instructions here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/unlock-bitlocker-protected-drive

Cross-posted to here to correct.

You are correct about how I set it up. Still doesn't work.

Haven't received any helpful responses in either forum.

Drive still shows auto-unlock enabled with the required protectors, but will not unlock when windows starts. I've reluctantly moved all data to the OS drive until I can get this fixed, but it's a major problem.

Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft community.

Please answer the below question to understand the issue better.

Which hard disk is not supporting with auto unlock?

I would appreciate if you provide the error with screen shots.

I suggest you to refer the below link to unlock the drives.

It is a Samsung 850 EVO used as as fixed data drive. The OS drive is encrypted with Bitlocker, using TPM+PIN+StartupKey. There is no error message: I can encrypt the drive just fine, and unlock it just fine after startup using any other protector I have enabled. However, while the Auto-Unlock feature shows that it is enabled, after each startup the drive is inaccessible until I use, e.g., a password to unlock it. I have seen the below link many times. It does not describe my problem, or any potential solution to it.

(All of which was shown in my OP.)

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home  is the best place for bitlocker questions. The issue could be the drive controllers, chipset drivers, or any other driver or a BIOS update.

Thank you for repeating an admonition I have already heeded. As noted above, I cross-posted at the recommended location after the first admonition. In the future, I will refrain from answering questions posed by Microsoft Support Engineers, since that seems to be counterproductive.

Trey,

Apologies for digging this year old post up but I am having the exact same issue you described.  I too have a Samsung 850 EVO (actually 3 of them, 1 x system drive and 2 x fixed data drives).

Just wondering if you found a resolution to this issue?  It is driving me nuts!  I have tried just about everything and am now out of ideas.

I did get the auto-unlock feature working consistently when the encryption is software based however given the 850 EVO drive is a self-encrypting drive, plus the other benefits, I would much prefer hardware based encryption via eDrive and BitLocker.

Would really appreciate any help or other info you may have gathered.

Thanks in advance!
