Office 2016 attachment bug

I recently upgraded to Office 2016 (365). Everything appeared to work properly, but now when I send attachments via Outlook, most of the recipients cannot either see them or open them. Attachments have all been Excel, Word, PowerPoint and PDFs. When trying to open the attachment the recipient gets the error message stating the file is invalid, has the wrong extension or is corrupted (various wordings depending on whether it is Excel, Word or PPT, but essentially the same message). PDFs either do not show up as attachments or will not open. The attachments have been from files on both my OneDrive and on my desktop. I can open all the files on my desktop, but if I send myself an email with the attachment, it will not open per the error message stated above. I conducted an Office 2016 repair and have reinstalled Office 2016. Same problem continues.

I have spoken with three tech support people at Microsoft with no idea on what was causing the problem. The last and final solution from MS was to revert back to Office 2013, which I did. When I reverted back to 2013 everything worked properly. However, when I forwarded an email to myself originally sent from Outlook 2016, the same file would not open. There have been more than half a dozen recipients using various versions of Windows and Office that have seen this problem from my emails, so I know it is them, not me with the problem.

I am a power user, so I have good computer knowledge. About 3 days before upgrading to Office 2016 I upgraded from Win 7 Pro 64-bit to Win 10. It went absolutely smoothly. No conflicts. All drivers and peripherals working, so I don't think that is the problem.

Is anyone else seeing this?

Hello,

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Community.

In order to resolve this issue we need more information. Let us know the following:

What are the steps that you have tried so far to resolve this issue?

Try the following step and let us know the result.

Ask one of the recipients to save one of the attachments sent by you, to his/her desktop. Test if those attachments can be opened normally from the desktop using the open with option (Right-click on attachment and select Open With) without any issues.

Check the above and let us know.

Thank you.

Thank you for responding, Mohan.

I have conducted the following resolution steps.

1. Verified Office 2016 had latest updates.

2. Verified Win 10 64bit had latest updates.

3. Repaired Office 2016. Did not fix problem.

4. Reinstalled Office 2016. Did not fix problem.

5. Checked all settings under Outlook 2016, focusing on File>Options>Trust Center>Trust Center Settings and then unchecked everything relative to opening files in Enable Editing Mode (although I know that would only help on my end).

6. Verified problem by sending email to myself and then tried to open attachment. Attachment failed to open.

7. Called MS Tech Support. First agent could not resolve problem. Frankly, I don't think she had the capability to solve it.

8. Elevated call to a more senior MS Tech Support. He transferred call to a different MS Tech Support agent when he found out I had Office 2016 (Office 365).

9. Spoke with MS Tech Support agent Jyotsna Gangwar. She seemed very competent. We simultaneously worked through many test methods to determine cause and solution. We verified that all files can be opened whether they reside in the cloud (OneDrive) or on my desktop, but cannot be opened if they are attached to an email. No solution found, but it did appear the issue was with Outlook 2016. Her recommendation was to revert back to Office 2013 until a future update potentially fixes the problem.

10. After reverting back to Office 2013/Outlook 2013, I tried opening an email that I sent to myself while on Outlook 2016. Attachment would not open even under Outlook 2013. Resent same file under Outlook 2013. Attachment would now open.

Regarding your suggestion, recipients have tried "Open With..."), but it does not rectify the problem.

I believe I have now conducted a complete Design of Experiments and determined the bug is within Outlook 2016.

Currently I am now back on Office 2013 and waiting for a fix. I can reload Office 2016, but would prefer not to do so unless you have solid knowledge of what is causing the problem and a fix.

Regards,

I'm not seeing the problem, but that's not to say its not happening.

What internet security or anti-spam program is installed?

Hello:

I am running Kaspersky Internet Security v15.0.2.361(d) -- their latest version with the latest updates. Windows 10 "Real-time protection" and "Cloud-based Protection" are both on. I am not running any malware tools such as MalwareBytes.

The active Outlook Application Add-ins are:

Adobe Send & Track for Microsoft Outlook - Acrobat (doesn't do anything unless you attach a PDF and want to send it via Send & Track).

Kaspersky Outlook Anti-Virus Addin

Microsoft Exchange Add-in (even though I am not on MS Exchange)

Microsoft Junk E-mail Reporting Add-in

Microsoft SharePoint Server Colleague Import Add-in (even though I am not on MS SharePoint)

OneNote Notes about Outlook Items

Outlook Social Connector 2013 (remember, I am now back to using Outlook 2013)

I'm having the same issue with attachments.

It will dump the attachment and the recipient never sees it.  In the instances when I have multiple attachments, it is deleting 1.  I send 4, they get 3.  I send 3, they get 2.

It's driving me crazy!

Haven't received any further replies or solutions since October 13th. Apparently, things have gone dark at Microsoft.

I think the problem is larger...

I have also similar problems in Outlook 2013 and Outlook 2010.

Look at this blog :

I have narrowed the bug down to using the recent items from the Attach File dialog.  Outlook 2016 PC will not send an attachment at all if pulled from that list.  If I select Browse this PC and select it from there, it will work.  Using Google Apps Sync, no Anti-Virus software.

I had the recently opened documents list turned off in Outlook 2016, so my problem didn't result from that. However, I think I may have also discovered a possible reason for the problem.

I always clicked on Attachment in an email, then would go to Browse this PC. From there I would select OneDrive and choose a file for attachment. I have now seen some info on the web that indicates the better (only?) way to do it is to select Attachment>Browse Web Locations>OneDrive, then select the file. Once the file shows up as an attachment in the email, select the down arrow on the attachment and select Attach as copy. That process apparently downloads the file. If you don't do that I think it was attaching a "piece" of the file for lack of a better word.

It makes sense because during my Design of Experiments, attachments from my Desktop would work, but not those from OneDrive, where most of my files exist.
