Continuous Page Numbering in sections

How do I keep continuous page numbering when I have a section break? I created a list into 2 columns in the middle of a page. The next page says it is section 3 and the page number starts at 2. If I go into the page number reformatting and have it start on the next number  which is 17, it shows 18. Please help. I am using Word 2013 and there are no current responses for this version.

Carol, I'm returning a corrected copy of your document.

The issue was indeed that the 2-column section had “Start at page 1” in its Page Number Format setting. I changed that to “Continue from previous section”, and everything is now numbered as expected. These are the steps I used:

  • Click somewhere in the middle of the 2-column section.
  • Press Ctrl+Enter to insert a page break at that point, so that the 2-column section now crosses a page boundary. That means that the header of the 2-column section can now be accessed. (This is the key point you were missing before. Without the page break, you could only see the section 1 and section 3 headers.)
  • Open the header pane on the page after the inserted page break, and go to Header & Footer Tools > Page Number > Page Number Format.
  • Change the start of the section to “Continue from previous section” and click OK.
  • Delete the added page break.
The macro that Doug Robbins posted would also do the trick, without bothering about the page break. If you aren’t comfortable using macros, though, the manual method above is the only way.
