Duplicate icons in Win 10 logon screen

Thank you for your reply and suggestions.

Unfortunately none of them fixed this issue.

To clarify:

- the Microsoft Accounts do not exhibit the issue. It is only the Local Accounts that are displaying the duplicate icons

- this issue started with (if I remember correctly) build 10041. Before that the problem was not occurring. I am not sure if it was build 10041 but I do remember it was the first build that also had an issue with duplicate folders in the My Documents (or whatever it is called now)

- I will restore my Win 7 image and try to upgrade again using the iso of build 10130 and see if this changes anything.

In the mean time if you have any other ideas as to why this is happening these would be very welcome.

Every local account (even those created after updating to Win 10) displays duplicate icons in the logon screen.

I have now updated another computer (also from Win7) and it does the same thing.

I'm also facing the same issue on my dell i3 desktop (Win 7). I did not face this issue on my dell laptop upgrade which was windows 8.1. Could it be an issue only for upgrading from Win 7.

Tried disabling Verbose Status key (it was enabled earlier as pc was slow in startup /shutdown - it still is)

I wonder why this is not being picked by Microsoft on priority. I saw such an issue reported on tenforum.com as well no one has a clue?

I did eventually find what was causing the issue and that was a duplicate entry in the Registry in

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\CredentialProviders

where there were two entries for the value PasswordProvider

I exported both from the Registry then deleted one of them and found out it was the incorrect one so I re-imported it and then deleted the other one which solved my double entries in the Logon Screen.

That said after having found this solution I eventually restored win7 and then re-upgraded using the public release of win10 and the issue did not happen again so I am wondering if this was caused by one of the Insider Preview versions and in effect carried over with each subsequent version

I have an ASUS laptop which apparently uses another Credential Provider.  All I needed to do was disable it.  Other machines may have a similar issue:

1. Log into your machine using one of the offending accounts named Password on your screen.

2. In the registry, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI

3. Copy the value associated with LastLoggedOnProvider

4. Now go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\CredentialProviders

5. Find the CredentialProvider that has the same value noted in step 3 (FYI, in my case, this was the AdsmCredentialProvider... it may be something different on your machine).

6. Right click on this offending CLSID and create a new DWORD value named "Disabled" and give it a value of 1.

7. Reboot your machine, the offending accounts should no longer be there.

Please review the information in the link before attempting this.  I didn't have to do everything suggested there but following those instructions will help you with doing this safely if you have doubts.  Hope this helps people with the same problem.

TSpencer58's regedit fix above  worked for me too.

This was on a 'Win7 Starter' netbook that had been upgraded through various Win10 Insider builds.  The duplicate accounts (all with 'Password' as the account name) appeared after an early Insider Win10 load, then disappeared briefly for one build (can't remember which one), then came back and 'stuck' right through to and including the final production release.

The netbook ended up with me setting up several Local user accounts as well as my main MS one (the netbook is a 'spare' for use by friends & family), and each of them also generated a paired Password account immediately on creation.  Interestingly, though, I had only to add the above new DWORD registry entry to the first Password account I selected and ALL the duplicates disappeared immediately on returning to the sign-on screen (didn't even have to reboot ... although I did reboot anyway, just to be sure things stayed OK).

As suspected by AlexisMontenegro above, I too think it is something introduced in the Insider builds, because my Win7 desktop PC (and for that matter my Win8.1 laptop) upgraded to Win10 without this duplicate accounts issue.

Final comment ... searching forums for a solution over past weeks show exactly the same issue has arisen for people upgrading to Win7 & Win8.x over the years!  No definitive solutions were evident on those forums, although some people did have success after uninstalling finger-print reading software that was present on some of their machines.

I'm facing the same issue on a newly installed Win10 Enterprise laptop.

Trying to follow your steps here, but I'm unable to create a new DWORD value. I get the message saying "Error Creating Value. Cannot create value: Error writing to the registry." I'm running regedit as Administrator.

Any clues to why that's not working?
