Email Address displayed twice on Windows 10 Sign in Screen

On the Windows 10 sign in screen my email address (it is my Microsoft Account) is displayed twice.  Once where it should be and once where my user name should be displayed.  It looks correct on my other computer.  The email address is also displayed at the top of the start menu, instead of the user name.  I have tried everything I can think of without being able to get it to change permanently.

Using netplwiz, I can see the User Name is correct and the Full Name is blank.  If I add what I want displayed to Full Name and sign out and back in, it appears correct until it gets logged in and then it changes back and the Full Name is blank again.

Any of you Windows Smart People have any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Mirko, Thanks your insight about the former account alias got me to a fix.  I searched the registry on my laptop (displays two email addresses) and desktop (displays name and email correctly) for mentions of my *** Email address is removed for privacy *** and found one that existed on the laptop but not the desktop. So I deleted it and rebooted. Problem solved and it worked on both of my laptops that were displaying it incorrectly.

The reg key in question is:

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\IdentityCRL\StoredIdentities\*** Email address is removed for privacy ***

Deleting that key and leaving the one for the *** Email address is removed for privacy *** fixed it on both machines. So far I have not seen any adverse impact.

Thanks again for your assistance.

Anyone else using this fix, please be careful editing the registry.

John A. Wolf

Thanks Mirko and John, I had opened another thread on the same issue,

Thanks to Mirko assistance on the other thread lead me to your posting, John.

I am happy to say that the registry edit fixed the problem. A lot of people do not

want to play around with the registry. Maybe Microsoft can come up with a solution

so that it doesn't happen.

This worked perfectly.  Tried everything including resetting device.  Real pain and this was very easy.  Only note:

  • Make sure to login as an Administrator
  • Enter regedit in "Search the web and Windows"
  • Hit enter
  • Click YES
  • Navigate to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\IdentityCRL\StoredIdentities\OldAliasedAccount@hotmail.com
  • Delete old alias
  • Close regedit
  • Sign out
  • Restart

FIXED!!!

One way to fix Mail box issues which happened a few times in the past two years is to un-install the Mail app... and then re-install from the Store....all settings will restore them selves except for your personal details.*john
