Windows update successfully installs KB2802618 repeatedly

Windows Update continually installs KB2802618.

I have downloaded the update manually and run it - several times - and each time it says it was successful; it then does not appear in updates.
I have run the Windows Update troubleshooter, and after asking for Admin permissions, the troubleshooter "Fixed" issues.

Still no joy.

Issues
  • DISM /cleanup-image returns that the option is unknown
  • The Installed Updates list is empty
  • (therefore) it is not possible to uninstall and re-install updates
Solutions attempted:
  • wsreset
  • Windows UPdate Troubleshooter and Cleanup Tool
  • Rename of cabroot2 and SoftwareDistribution [post]
  • Confirmed user group similar memberships between Windows 8 devices (one working, one not)
  • Using Powershell for /cleanup-image [post]
  • Checking registry entry permissions between Windows 8 devices
  • Working one-by-one through the Updates to see if I can see a pattern, or supply a list at least
CONCLUSION

Manual repair was NOT successful.  After exhausting MANY MANY routes, including one-by-one installs, found to be down to the Software Protection Service not wanting to start - at all.  This was NOT fixed by a "Refresh" within Windows 8, nor was it fixed by off-line SFC or by DISM /cleanup (when I eventually got it to work).

Solution was to burn a Windows 8 DVD, run Setup, and then run an installation and remove ALL applications, leaving only User Data (second option).

After this, all updates installed correctly, and no software I have installed subsequently has brought the problem back.

As you have performed most the troubleshooting steps which we really appreciate, let’s try to run Deployment Imaging and Servicing Management (DISM). To do that please follow the steps below:

 

1. Open Command prompt in Elevated mode.

 

2. In the elevated command prompt, copy and paste the command below

 

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

 

/CheckHealth - This switch option only checks to see if a component corruption marker is already present in the registry. It is just a quick way to see if corruption currently exists, and to inform you if there is corruption. It does not fix anything or create a log. This should be finished almost instantaneous.

/ScanHealth - This switch option does not fix any corruption. It only checks for component store corruption and records that corruption to the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. This is useful for only logging what, if any, corruption exists. This should take around 5-10 minutes to finish.

/RestoreHealth - (recommended) This switch option checks for component store corruption, records the corruption to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log, and FIXES the image corruption. This should take around 10-15 minutes up to about an hour to finish depending on the level of corruption.

 

Restart the computer and try to install the update manually as you did it before and update us on the status of the issue.

I am having the same issue. It is preventing me from downloading the Windows 8.1 update I think because I am not getting the 8.1 update in Windows store. I ran the first command in command prompt and it said, "No Componant store corruption detected".

Any other ideas?

I ran your suggestions which like the others produced no real results. I ran WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab and produced some info. But it also was able to fully reset my update store and act like I had never downloaded updates list (my update history was fine). When I reran my updates, I found that KB2802618 errors the FIRST time only with error: 80070002. After that, each time it attempts to install, it comes back a success.

 

Below are outputs of my logs (in new replies due to character limit). Please let me know what else you need to help us with this problem.

I ran the file itself using the log option. The logs notated that it was trying to download this:

Was trying to get Windows 8.1 upgrade but was not appearing in Windows Store :(

Two updates were required - continually failing - I thought they might be the blocker.

 

Failing Update 1:

Intel Corporation - Storage Controller - Intel(R) 7 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller 

 

Finally solved it by installing this Intel Rapid Storage Driver:

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/xps-8500?driverId=HH2P4&osCode=W764&fileId=3156029474&languageCode=en&categoryId=SA

It says it includes support for 7 Series SATA AHCI Controller.

 

It installed fine.

 

Then tried Windows Update again said the update was required. Tried it and this time it worked!!

 

Failing Update 2: KB2802618

Updates say they succeed, but update still required.

I note on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2802618?wa=wsignin1.0 that under File Information it refers to

File name File version File size Date Time Platform
Ntoskrnl.exe 6.2.9200.16518 6,965,992 02-Feb-2013 10:54 x64
Ntoskrnl.exe 6.2.9200.20623 6,965,480 02-Feb-2013 08:59 x64

 

However my C:\Windows\System32\ntoskrnl.exe is 6.2.9200.16628

 

So is this patch is trying to install an older ntoskrnl.exe ???

 

 

 

 

PS I have "Windows 8 Pro with Media Center" (64 bit) as I see that many people complaining Windows 8.1 upgrade failing for this :(

Curious. Windows Update now does not report any necessary updates...so KB2802618 problem solved?

 

Edit: problem still exists: I realise I just Hid the upgrade - hid the problem

 

So back to my attempt to upgrade:

Alas Windows 8.1 still not appearing in my windows store yet :(

 

And when I try to install Windows KB2871389 it says The update is not applicable to your computer :(
