Can't install Cumulative Update for Windows 10: August 5, 2015 (KB3081424) on Windows 10 Pro x64.

I have installed all previous updates successfully.

KB3081424 gets to 35% and restarts. Normal so far. After the restart, it picks up where it left off and gets to 51%. Nothing suspicious.

As soon as it gets to 51%, BAM. We couldn't finish the updates. Then it starts rolling back, restarting itself around 5 times in the process.

When the PC was finally usable again, I went to the system event log and saw error 0x80070003, which means it couldn't find the update files that were supposed to be installed. Considering my first paragraph, is it possible that the update is not needed? If it is, please help me find a solution.

So far, I have found 5 other people on Reddit with the same issue.

Okay, so another redditor found a solution. What fixed it for us was a registry trick, so don't go ahead with this if you don't know what you're doing.

The idea is finding "zombie" users in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList key. I had a key containing a value that pointed to the home folder of a user named UpdatusUser, which is used for NVIDIA driver updates. So I backed up that key, deleted it and the update went fine. I restored the key after I was done, to make sure there are no problems with my NVIDIA updates in the future. I'll try this again if I ever have problems with Windows Update, but it's a PITA. Either Microsoft or NVIDIA should fix something on their part.

Can a mod mark this as the answer? Thanks.

The above registry hack worked for me. For me, It was deleting a left over profile. Once I deleted the left over profile of the registry, I was able to install the update successfully.

How to know a profile is left over profile..??

Plz help..!!!

Here's some stuff that should be kept:

* %systemroot%\system32\config\systemprofile

* C:\WINDOWS\ServiceProfiles\LocalService

* C:\WINDOWS\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService

* C:\Users\DefaultAppPool

* C:\Users\<insert your username here>, for all "normal" users on the computer

These are all folders that exist and are necessary.

If you've deleted a usual user profile (through normal means) before and it's still in ProfileList, delete it. If you have NVIDIA drivers and you see a profile with the ProfileImagePath C:\Users\UpdatusUser, delete it if the folder doesn't actually exist (but back up the key anyway).

If there are other profiles with inexistent home folders, try using Google to find out what they are for and if they're safe to delete. After all, the update will fail as long as there are still home folders that don't exist.

Hope that helped.
