Cannot play original xbox games, error..

After reading the sticky and various posts detailing my same problem, I'm still sort of hoping someone can help me figure out what I'm doing wrong.

First, let me be clear: My husband bought me my 360 a few years ago for christmas from Gamestop. He also bought me a Microsoft 20gig harddrive from Best Buy about a month later. I know the harddrive is a microsoft hard drive as I recall the packaging, it says it clearly on the thing, and when I select that particular HDD from the system it has the little logo underneath it. It is the only HDD I have ever had for my 360. I don't have a backup.

Today I decided it would be awesome to play Jade Empire again. Upon inserting the disc, up popped an update. I figured it was the backwards compatibility software and let it install while I made dinner. After it installed and had rebooted the system I tried to boot up the game. Didn't work. It gave me the error stating I needed to redownload the game. I noticed that where it would normally have the graphic for the game disc it said CDX. I didn't think much of that at the time. Since it wasn't working, I glanced through the forums and looked at the official sticky. I tried deleting the content, clearing the system cache, and redownloading the update. None of that worked, it still gave me the error. So I decided to try something different. I went and grabbed my Fable disc to see if maybe that would work, thinking perhaps that it might be the Jade Empire disc. This time the cd graphic read "Play Fable Presale Disc" but it still gave me the error. I searched the forums and google a bit more and saw a post somewhere that mentioned that the update for the compatibility software required 3 gigs of storage. I realized that I had less than a gig available on my HDD, so I went and deleted a bunch of games that I don't particularly play anymore and freed up 9 gigs worth. I cleared the system cache, redownloaded the update and.. it still told me I had 9 gigs free, which made me scratch my head because I thought the update would take up 3 of them. Still won't read the disc.

I don't have another system to test these games in having sold both of my old xboxes, but both discs are in pristine condition with no scratches on them and the last time I used either of them they worked fine without any glitches.

So, "in short" .. is there something I'm missing, some step I've overlooked?

Oh, P.S. Jade Empire's disc and the Fable disc are both limited editions, but I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

Did a bit of googling and found this -

The limited edition of Jade Empire does work but the wikipedia entry says the bonus disc won't work on PAL60. Whether that translates to the main game or not I don't know but it could be worth switching over to 50hz and seeing if it'll work then. Widescreen doesn't work either so look into switching that off and seeing if it will play ball then.

I couldn't find an entry for Fable's limited edition version but again Wikipedia says both Fable and Fable: The Lost Chapters don't like widescreen so again look into switching that off and seeing if they play ball then.

Had to revert back to the lowest graphic setting to be able to change the screen format. Also switched my tv setting to normal, down from widescreen. Still getting the game error, unfortunately. It was a good try though. :) Thank you.

Here's the list from Wikipedia pertaining to Backwards Compatible games:

en.wikipedia.org/.../List_of_Xbox_games_compatible_with_Xbox_360

Do you have any other games from that list that you can try?  Do you have a friend with an XBox who's HDD you can try on your XBox or can you try those disks on theirs.  With all that you've gone through to get your games to work, all that seems left is that it isn't actually an Official Microsoft HDD.  Some of the third party HDDs and their packaging are very similar to that of Microsoft's.  Not doubting what you believe about your HDD, just trying to offer any solution that you can try.

Has me totally stumped. I've searched everywhere and cannot find a similar issue, or a fix [:(]

I think its either an issue with the update, or something to do with the settings on your xbox... although I know you've tried that, its all I could think it would be [:(]

As an update: I went to the list Knowitall suggested and took a look at my other games. I have Halo 2 and star wars knights of the old republic. In both cases I still got the game couldn't start error.

Ps: I took my hdd off and looked at it. It has the Microsoft address on the bottom along with Microsoft imprinted into the plastic. I assume, therefore, it's a Microsoft product and not an off brand.

The only possible last ditch, hail mary, one in a million, $64,000 dollar question I can think of is are those games from the same region as your console? IE if your console is an American one are the games also the American versions?

If it's not that I say we call Dr.House and let him solve it.

Yes, they're all American games, as is my console. The only thing I didn't try was to reformat the hdd and that I didn't want to do because I don't have a flash drive big enough to back my files up.

Anyone got House's number then?

I'm trying to look positive about this but this is so damn frustrating. Not even Occam's Razor works with this problem, OCCAM'S RAZOR!

Did you try the games at a friends with an XBox, a neighbours, grab some random person walking down the street and ask them if you can try those disks on their XBox?  Or borrow someone's HDD?

This is frustrating, it's hurting my brain, I can't imagine what it must be like for the OP!

I have the same problem I can't play any type of Xbox Original game when I first bought my Xbox 4gb Slim I could play them but when I went online and updated to the newest firmware it quit playing them so I think something is wrong with the update. If I could downgrade to they previous update to the one it came with I could play my games. So I heard this was possible and am going to try to see if it works. I'll post and again if it works.
