This is due to the audio output being different from the video input.  The xbox tries to use just one cable instead for everything instead of each cable for its intended purpose.  Two solutions exist: 1) buy the official audio adapter meant to be used along with the HDMI cable.  2) [Mod Removed]

@Mephisto VI - I edited your post as it describes how to modify the console and accessories, therefore voiding the warranty. Your first solution is the correct one. :)

Do you have anything plugged into the A/V port on the Xbox?

I have the Microsoft dongle (sound adaper thingy) plugged into the AV port, and the HDMI running to my monitor.

my AV port stuff runs to my external speaks.

When i change the input on my monitor from HDMI, its fine, the xbox still runs, but when i change it back to HDMI, the xbox resets. Help?

Hey FERR3T, does the same thing happen with the Microsoft dongle removed? If not, I'm guessing that the Xbox 360 is sensing the difference between which port is being used, and when the HDMI is 'activated,' the console resets to accommodate the new settings.

When I remove the dongle it does not do the same thing.  I can select the HDMI input with the monitor and the xbox doesnt restart.  I'm guessing the restarting is a normal function, but just kind of, well a pain sometimes.  Is there anyway I can have the dongle in and not have it reset?  I know I can still hear sounds if its on a nother input and the dongle is still in like i should so it all works but like you said, just the HDMI getting activated i guess.

Any workarounds or way to make the resetting NOT happen while still able to connect it to HDMI?

I guess if not, would a HDMI -to-> VGA work the same way? or would I just have to go with straigh component to vga adapter.  Would really love to still use the HDMI if possible since its a nice LED monitor.

Thanks for the reply!

I have this problem as well and it's well documented on the internet. What we really need here is a setting on the XBOX that stops the XBOX from trying to read both ports. This way switching inputs on the device the XBOX is connected to will not force the XBOX to restart.

This is a problem that I recently encountered.

It is true that this only happens when you have both the HDMI and the AV port in use at the same time. This is most common for example if you are using Turtle Beach (Component connection) or similar headsets as well as an HDMI TV.

At present there is no work around this issue. I only realised the cause when I gave my headset to a friend and he started having it happen.

If its a major issue for you then probably switching to either the component cables or a vga cable will be the best bet for now. If you have the new Slim console you could always use either a headset for the audio that gets its feed from the optical out socket or a suitable home speaker system that would also use the optical out. This would negate needing to use the AV socket and fix the problem for you.
