Contacts completely missing after March 2012 Windows Live Mail Update to build 15.4.3555

I'm a PC tech and have encountered a curious problem on a client's computer after she updated Windows Live Mail a week ago - the Contacts have disappeared.

OS is Windows 7

1.  After the Update, when I click on Contacts the right pane remains in whatever it was.  It continues to display the inbox or whatever I was viewing before clicking on Contacts.
2.  I used the Everything app to search the entire hard drive for "contacts" but there were no .contacts (dot contacts) files displayed.
3.  There are no contacts files in the Recycle Bin, which has not been emptied in the past 30 days.
4.  I ran Recuva and could not locate any deleted files, even unrecoverable files, with the .contacts file extension.
5.  The Deleted Files folder in Live Mail does not contain any contacts - I thought that perhaps the individual contacts had been deleted - although the folder contains email messages deleted over a month ago.
6.  I logged onto the Live Mail website, went to Contacts, Manage but there were no recoverable contacts available.
7.  When doing the file searches (2, 3 & 4 above) I looked for both .contacts files and for names of contacts - nothing was displayed meeting those criteria.

I'm baffled.  It is almost as though the original .contacts file had been entirely replaced during the update process, without leaving any traces of the original file.  The client had about a hundred contacts, and fortunately most of those are on a printed list so they can be scanned into a .csv file and imported, or she can just re-enter them.  But I'm baffled about what happened here, and very curious.

Can anyone shed some light on this issue?

Answer
If you have EVER signed in to a windows live account, after the update you will have this problem.

The problem is that the new version of Windows Live Mail tries to use your contacts in your windows live account EVEN if you are not signed in, or if your windows live account is not tied to a hotmail account (eg. if it is tied to a gmail or ISP mail account.

You need to manually go in and disable windows live account "functionality".

1) Open the unlabeled menu In the upper left.

2) Select Options, then Mail.

3) Select the Connections tab.

4) Click on "Stop signing in".

Restart Windows Live Mail. Your contacts should be working now. If you messed it up in your attempts to solve this problem you may need to import your contacts from your last CSV backup.
