Remote desktop connection fails with no error

I am running Windows Vista SP1 and am unable to connect using Remote Desktop

The client connects, authenticates and the 'configuring remote session window appears and then immediately closes back to the Connection dialog. There is no error logged in Event Viewer on the client or the server.

The problem started after the computer was rebooted and Windows Update attempted to install SP2 once again, which always fails.

Telnet works into the machine but the display is garbled and unreadable (all characters are blank when you type)

I've read various articles that suggest the problem is due to NVidia drivers - these have been removed but the problem still exists

Any help would be much appreciated

Hi,

Method 1:

You may try configuring the computer to clean boot state and check if any of the third party program is interfering in the process. To configure the computer to clean boot follow the link given below.

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: After you have finished troubleshooting, follow step 7 in the article to boot to normal startup.

Method 2:

Also, temporarily disable the Security software and Firewall settings and check if that helps. Follow the links for more information.

Disable antivirus software

Firewall: frequently asked questions

Understanding Windows Firewall settings

Allow a program to communicate through Windows Firewall

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Allow-a-program-to-communicate-through-Windows-Firewall

Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you do have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you are connected to the Internet or a network during the time your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Method 3:

Since the problem started after unsuccessful installation of SP2, it might be the corrupt installation files of SP2. You may also try a system restore and check if that helps.

Note: When you perform System Restore to restore the computer to previous state, programs and updates you installed are removed.

I have already tried all of these methods

Firewall\Antivirus settings do not make any difference

Attempting a system restore fails - it looks like the failed upgrade has corrupted the backup as well

I think I have found the cause but I have no idea how to fix it

The following error is being logged under security

Code integrity determined that the image hash of a file is not valid.  The file could be corrupt due to unauthorized modification or the invalid hash could indicate a potential disk device error.

File Name: \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Windows\System32\rdpdd.dll

How do i fix this?

Hi,

You may use the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) to replace the file and check if that helps. To do this, follow the link given below.
