Windows Media Player is "frozen" on desk top after auto-updates were applied yesterday.

Windows ran an "auto update" to my Windows 7 system yesterday.  Today I hit the Windows Media Player icon o n my toolbar but when Media Player came to desktop it just "froze" and now I can't get rid of it.  I'm very inexperienced with computers....what can I do to fix?   Please help!

Hi bo4usa,

a. Do you happen to remember the updates (KB) you installed, by any chance?

As a test, let's restart the computer and check if that fixes the issue.

If restarting the computer does not help, let’s put the computer in a clean boot state and check if that fixes the issue.

Putting your system in clean boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue. If yes, you may have to contact the program manufacturer for any updates or uninstall and re-install the program.

Follow the steps listed below to put your computer in clean boot state:

1. Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights.

2. Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER to start the System Configuration Utility. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

3. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the Load startup items check box. (The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.)

4. On the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all.

5. Click OK, and then click Restart.

The above steps would put the computer in clean boot state.

Refer the following Microsoft KB article for more information on how to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7:

Note: After troubleshooting, make sure to put the computer to start as usual as mentioned in Step 7 in the above KB article.

Hope this helps.
