I keep getting these error codes when i am trying to play my games error code = 0xc8660160 then Error: access violation at 0x0046E841 please help!!!!!

I have been playing games on my comp since i have had it and never had any problems so far till now. every time i go to open most of the games i have i get this :
First -
           Could not open display.
            Error code = 0xc8660160
I would close that box and i would get this :
Second -
            Error : Access Violation at 0x0046E841 (Tried to read from 0x00000004) Program terminated.
I would close that box then i will see the such and such program has stopped working and gives the option to either look online for a solution or close the program i always choose find a solution and have still not found one. I have recently installed the a vista service pack but this had happened once before i installed this please help i have searched all over for these codes and have found no reference to them anywhere. I have also tried changing my screen resolution and that didnt work.
