Go to the order summary page, there you will find your product key:
Go to this website and click on "Account/ Download + product keys " (near the page bottom), the information there should help you obtain your product key and order information.
http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msus/en_US/home
You can download it from there and use your product key to upgrade:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-8/upgrade-product-key-only
Microsoft should be able to retrieve your product key though, I find that strange.
If you experience any problem with order summary and billing issue, please contact a customer support agent at:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/esd-support-phone-numbers
Is the software installed still?
Here are four utilities, all of which will may display your product keys if they are still there:
Belarc Advisor: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
(It does a good job of providing a wealth of information.)
Also: http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml
and: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html
and RockXP: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4138.html which has additional features

Hah... Microsoft recover your product keys? That's an awesome joke.
I purchased my Windows 8 on Oct 26, 2012 from Arvato Digital Services. I kept my email in my Outlook.com, marked and stored in a location I would not delete it from... Went into my account today, cannot find a single email from before 2013.
Alright, fine my email is MIA, call Microsoft as everyone suggests. Got the number from http://support.microsoft.com/gp/esd-support-phone-numbers and called them. Three transfers later and on hold for 30 minutes+ I finally get someone that can "assist me". They assist me by telling me that they have no way of retrieving the product key that was purchased, even though you have the order number (which does not work on their order site), it was purchased through Paypal and you are looking at the receipt. The ONLY way that you can get your product key.... Purchase a brand new one from them for $100.
Yeah, Microsoft will help ya out real good. Help you out by lightening your Wallet.

Hi,
If you can still boot your computer, and it is activated properly, you can in fact recover your product key with one of the programs Andre mentioned.... It is stored in your Registry.
The http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html doesn't require installation so it doesn't leave something installed on your machine...
When you run one of these, you will get a "Product ID" and the key... You need the key...
I don't know what the other issues are, but this will get you what you need... the key to reinstall.
BTW... most of the replies on this forum are from volunteers, not Microsoft...
Unless the poster is identified specifically as a Microsoft Support Engineer, you are
communicating with a volunteer... All of the other titles are honorary.

Hi,
That makes the nature of your problem a bit more clear... I wish I had a answer....
The only thing I can suggest is to try the esd support numbers and hopefully get someone a bit more helpful...
I had a problem activating Media Center for Win 8... The first person I spoke to when I called basically implied that I was pirating their software... even though Microsoft emailed me the key, and I still have the email !!!
I gave up, and after fuming for a couple of days I tried again... Things went much better, the second person I spoke to was much more understanding and knowledgeable of my issue. My Media Center was activated with the key I had been sent, and I have never had another issue reactivating it...
It might be worth another try.
