I read the post and I have listed as much info as I could find.

These are the installs I can see;

• MS Silverlight 5.1.50428.0 install date; 13/09/2016

What I noticed and done;

• The updates were done at 17:19pm local time
• I came home at approx 8.30pm, where I made the discovery.
• Screensaver gone, start bar buttons gone, screen login picture gone, all desktop icons gone (except for google web browser icon)
• Startup icons gone (normally about 9x programs start on startup. This time only skype was available
• When checking in the control panel (uninmstall a program), I could see all program icons and descriptions but most of them had become a 'text' icon. When hovering over the icons or clicking on a program, the reply was that this program was uninstalled and if I wanted to remove thisa program from the list (which I didn't do.
• All my passwords have been wiped
• MS Office is totally gone (incl outlook and all emails and 
• There were some folders left but many files have disappeared.
• All my firewalls and virus protection programs appear to be wiped.

In essence; I have an empty computer!

Right now, the only option I seem to have (and recover my businesses) seems to be re-installing programs.

I purchased programs in the past, which have to be registered upon purchase have all gone, which possibly means I have to repurchase. In example; Dropbox, MS Office Professional, Drawing programs, Video programs.

I hope this is enough info for you to help analyse?

I found this interesting, don't know if it matters which version you are using or not, but once they removed the update some things their favorites were restored.

It appears to me that the latest Patch Tuesday round was snakebitten, which is why I gave up installing the same 4-5 updates to updates and then some finally. We've been through this all year it seems, certainly all spring and summer.

Open a Command Prompt window and tell us what the prompt says.

In this example I would report that the prompt says:  c:\Users\Jose

When you open a Command Prompt window what does your prompt say?

I have three (3) main concerns which override everything else:

• How many of those updates are listed in Installed Updates, not just Update History?
  
  
• Many of those updates were released as long as 2½ years ago. Why weren't they offered before 13 Sept-16?
  
  
• Microsoft Security Essentials is only offered as an Optional update when Windows Update's engine cannot detect the presence of a properly installed anti-virus application.

That being said and assuming Win7 64-bit with Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) installed...

We'll need to "dig a little deeper" here. Please answer each of the following [admittedly tedious] diagnostic questions in a correspondingly-numbered list in your very next reply, preferably without quoting my post:

1a. When (approx. date) did you purchase the computer?

1b. Who manufactured the computer (e.g., Dell; HP; Sony; Lenovo)?

1c. Did Win7 64-bit come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it, did you do a clean install of Win7, or did you upgrade a (e.g., Vista; WinXP) computer to Win7?

1d. Has Windows 10 ever been installed?

1e. Have you ever done a Repair Install and/or a clean install of Windows 7?

2. What is the full name of your installed anti-virus application or security suite (if any) and when (approx. date) does your current subscription expire? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender) are installed? What third-party firewall (if any)?

3. Has a(nother) Norton application or a McAfee application EVER been installed on the computer since you bought it?

4. Did a Norton free-trial or a McAfee free-trial [PICK ONE] come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)

5a. Is KB3185319, KB3185911, KB3184471, KB3175024, KB3184122, KB3177186, and/or KB3092627  listed in Installed Updates (not Update History)? [1]

5b. How about KB3179573, KB3172605 and/or KB3161608?

6. Assuming Java is installed => Is Java Version 8 Update 101 (or higher) installed? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORER ONLY! => http://java.com/en/download/uninstallapplet.jsp [2]

• Java Update: Patch it or pitch it

8c. Is Firefox version 48.0.2 (or higher) and/or Google Chrome version 53.0.2785.113 (or higher) or any other alternate browser installed?

9. Are you in the habit of using "Registry cleaners" (e.g., Registry Mechanic; System Mechanic; RegCure; RegClean Pro; Advanced SystemCare; Total System Care; Glary Utilities; Registry Booster; McAfee QuickClean; AVG Quick Clean; AVG PC TuneUp; Norton Registry Cleaner; Norton PC Tuneup; PCTools Optimiser; SpeedUpMyPC; FixMyPC; PC Doctor; TuneUp Utilities; WinMaximizer; WinSweeper; Comodo System Cleaner; Advanced System Optimizer; CCleaner Registry Cleaner component)?

Remove the Cumulative Update for September 2016, which I have to look up again and paste in a minute.

Better yet scrub all updates from September 13, 2016 and set your Windows Update settings to download and alert me but let me decide.

NEVER use Automatic Updating! The guy who wrote GWX Control Panel taught us valuable lessons while we fought to remain on 7 and 8.1. Now that you aren't in direct danger of getting a drive-by upgrade you still have to study EVERY SINGLE UPDATE anyway.

They've also been patching the same 4-5 patches all Spring and Summer, every month, like they can't get anything right.

But you 64-bit users really have a problem. one that I can duplicate yet because my lone 64-bit machine had a hard drive failure (SMART 303 error, it held on long enough for me to back up my data and expired, the brave thing). But for misplace the SATA cable for it I'd have reinstalled by now.

Wait a day or two for others to find your problems for you (the original guinea pig support, this is part two) and keep your eyes on your search engine with a query like September 2016 Patch Tuesday problems and go read forums and articles outside here as well. Only then will your support be complete.

And at least PA Bear is on this instead of the script readers hired from the cable company. Next time let Americans do this, we mess it up CORRECTLY! ;p

I was thinking the user profile was corrupted and Windows has logged in using a temporary profile:

When a user profile is corrupted it would appear that most/all the items that usually appear on the desktop are missing, all/most things are missing from the All Programs menu, all personal documents would be "missing", etc. when in fact everything is still there under the afflicted profile instead.  Everything is gone!  When in fact nothing is really gone.

Add/Remove Programs and Windows Updates still appear the same since those are system wide things,

If that is/were the case instead of opening a Command Prompt in the folder belonging to the expected user a temp user profile wold be created at login and then the Command prompt window on most systems would read:

c:\Users\Temp

That is the quick test.

If Windows Update were the problem people all over the world would be having this problem and it doesn't appear that people all over the world are complaining about it - just one person.

It is hardly ever a good sign when you see this question:

I don't know about that...the last time I actually PURCHASED a computer was in the late 1990s and the only other one of any REAL note was a used 386 in 1992.

The last time it was a custom build from the computer repair shop...500 MHZ/500 MB!

(gee, it's been so long I'd forgotten MEGABYTES)

I managed to make it stream (barely) in 1999, after a FEW upgrades.

Not bad for 56k.
