Display Driver Error in Windows Media Center only on LiveTV. Minimizing/Maximizing fixes it.

When I move from another application in Windows Media Center, eg Music, Movies, back to LiveTV, I get audio and video for about 2 seconds then I get a "Display Driver Error: The video display device does not support playback of protected content."  This error is fixed by simply minimizing and re-maximizing WMC.  As soon as it's minimized, I get audio and video back.

There are no error messages in the logs.  I have upgraded to ATI CCC 9.11 from 9.10 after the issue began.

Hi,
Welcome to Microsoft answers.

Since when are you facing this issue?
Did you make any recent changes?
Does the same issue occur in Windows Media Player?

I suggest you to reduce the hardware acceleration and if it helps. Here are the steps:

1. Right click the Windows desktop and choose Personalize.
2. Click "Display Settings".
3. In the Display Settings dialog box, click "Advanced Settings..."
4. On the resulting dialog box, click the "Troubleshoot" tab.
5. Click "Change Settings"

You'll probably see a User Account Control message box asking for permission to continue. Click "Continue"
6. On the resulting Display Adapter Troubleshooter dialog box, move the slider one notch to the left.
7. Click on apply, and then ok.

Hi Azman,
I can confirm this exact same problem started occurring for me this week. It happened immediately after I installed some updates from Windows Update on Dec 1st. I checked the logs but didn't see anything that was directly applicable to this. I did a system restore but it wasn't able to undo those updates. This is on a Dell XPS 420, certified for OCUR. I thought maybe it had something to do with the new ATI firmware, so I installed that too, but yet the message still shows. Like the commenter above minimizing then restoring MC fixes this issue.

Coincidentally, I installed a new CPU in the computer as well. But the updates were installed before that, I just hadn't tried live tv in between the two.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Chris

Hi,

I have the exact same problem. I found a patch for the same problem under Vista (it is KB927084).

Is there a similar patch for Win 7?

Chris,

I have Windows 7 x64 with the ATI TV Wonder OCUR USB tuner. My issue is exactly the same as the one JWR1 reported. I can confirm that minimizing and maximazing the screen fixes it but it is annoying when I only have a remote handy and no keyboard.

I just got my ATI TV Wonder DCT as well and I am also experiencing this problem.  I also updated my video drivers to the latest 11.2 catalyst drivers from ati.amd.com.  I have an AMD phenom II processor with an HD 4650 graphics card.  I do have to say that the minimize/maximize-ing of Media Center appears to fix the issue, but thats pretty fail driver/software integration if that fixes the problem tbh.

I have no other monitors/HDTVs connected to this system other than a VIZIO SVT420XT1A HDTV.  the HDMI connection passes through a sony soundbar audio system as well, but thats obviously not a problem because the minimize/maximize trick allows me to watch protected content virtually indefinitely.

EXACT same issue here.
I have this problem on 2!!!! Media Center PCs at my house. I'm using a cablecard with my HDHomeRun Prime.

EVERY channel in media center complains about "Display Driver Error: The video display device does not support playback of protected content."

But if i minimize, then maximize.... the video starts to play.

WHAT IS THIS BUG???? FIX IT PLEASE!!!!

Same problem here.

I'm suspecting a resolution switching issue, and I'm going to try 720p tonight instead of 1360x768.

I had an ATI 5450 before this (downgraded to integrated 1200 to save room) and 720p had no issues.

Actually, I was wrong about my issue. On my computer with MULTIPLE monitors, I could work around the issue (sort of) as i previously described. But on my PRIMARY Windows Media Center that was only connected to my Television, I had absolutely no way of fixing it....

Until I figured out that the issue was LogMeIn :)

I have this exact same issue.  My issue was brought about by upgrading my processor.  My system has been running fine for a year without this problem.  Last week I ordered a AMD Phenom II 965 Black edition and installed it in my system (it replaced an AMD Athlon 5600+ processor).  After the swap this issue described above started happening consistently.  Miniminzing and maximizing fixes it but this is not practical with a remote.

I took the new processor out and put back in my old processor and the issue went away.  I am holding off putting the new proc back in for now.  Very dissappointed not being able to use it though.  Anyone have any ideas how to overcome?

Here are my system specs:

Windows 7 64Bit Home Premium

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz

Motherboard -  GIGABYTE GA-MA78GM-S2HP

Memory -  2GBx2 CORSAIR TWIN2X4096-6400C5 (DDR2)

Crucial 64GB SSD - for OS

750GB |SAMSUNG 7200 HD753LJ - for data

Tuner - Ceton Infinitv 4 - PCI
