Toshiba L775 Laptop FN key keyboard issue after Win10 upgrade and Windows Updates Applied

I have just upgraded Win10 Pro from a clean install of Win8.1 Pro. I was really happy with everything right up until Windows Update ran and installed a Toshiba specific update which remapped some of the most useful key functions on the keyboard.

Process of elimination leads me to believe that the Toshiba Hotkey Driver update installed by Windows Update breaks certain key mappings. Unfortunately it is not possible to uninstall the update. The only option is to disable the four relevant entries in Device Manager > Human Interface Devices but it doesn't fix the keyboard mapping issues. If you Uninstall using Device Manager the entries reinstall after a reboot.

Known Incorrect Key Behaviour

Tab Key = Have to press FN+TAB to actually tab across
Space Key = Have to press FN+SPACE to insert a space

Number 1 key above letter keys (not numpad) = Have to press FN+1 to type number 1 numeral

Number 2 key above letter keys (not numpad) = Have to press FN+2 to type number 2 numeral

Number 3 key above letter keys (not numpad) = Have to press FN+3 to type number 3 numeral

Number 4 key above letter keys (not numpad) = Have to press FN+4 to type number 4 numeral

To insert a ! or " or £ or $ then you have to press FN+SHIFT+required key.

Files listed are:

oem5.inf

thotkey.inf

It appears users have lost the ability to "Hide" an unwanted update otherwise I would do yet another install and block the Toshiba update.

This laptop is not on the Toshiba authorised list of laptops compatible with Win10 however everything works perfectly with out this update.

As a side note there is no BIOS setting to change FN Key functionality and there is no key combination e.g. FN+F11 or FN+NumLock to toggle the functionality. Basically the FN key is ON  by default when it should be off!

Further Info

After yet another reinstall and before connecting to the Internet to activate etc I disabled installing of "Device Driver Software from Windows Update" System Properties > Hardware > Device Installations. This failed to stop the Toshiba update being applied.

Another rebuild later and this time I used the utility listed in KB3073930 but it failed to detect the Toshiba Hotkey Driver update so therefore I couldn't hide it to prevent it installing.

I finally contacted Win10 Tech Support and went through it all. What a waste of time! The person had no idea on how to uninstall it and prevent it being installed again. The only advice was "wait until mid-August for some fixes to be released and hopefully it will be fixed!" Really!

THIS! I have been having the same problem with my Satellite C675-S7104!

This is severely frustrating! Though when I got into Settings>Update & Security>Advanced options>View your update historyI have five driver updates that Failed to install. One of them being the "Toshiba x86 ACPI-Compliant Value Added Logical and General Purpose Device"

Does yours show that as well?

There are 2 options:

1/
I had the very same problem after installing Windows 10 on my son's Toshiba Satellite L7750-S7340 Laptop. The top row of number keys (1 - 4) didn't work, and my space bar would only work if I pressed it with the "FN" key. There may have been other problems, but I was focused on just the two previously described.

I did all the usual trouble shooting things with no luck, although I noticed something wierd in device manager and returned to it after exhausting all the tips found on boards. I had noticed that my keyboard was listed as Lenovo and it had mouse drivers too; showing the mouse was Lenovo, as well.

I have been using a Microsoft wireless mouse (with USB dongle) and my keyboard was always Toshiba. So I removed the Lenovo Keyboard (and drivers) and the Lenovo mouse (and drivers) from my system. I rebooted and upon start-up everything was running normally again. Try this and see if it works for you. GOOD LUCK!
2/- After installing windows 10, windows start to download and install update . I see
Synaptics pointing Device driver version 19.0.9.5 (for Lenovo) conflicts with my laptop Toshiba Satellite L775D-S7226 . Problem is after updating (installing) some keys did not work such as number keys 1,2,3,4 and spacebar.

So I enter control panel, choose Uninstall program and click  Synaptics pointing Device driver (this version for Lenovo keyboard, although my keyboard is Toshiba) to uninstall it. After that my keyboard get back to normal.

After that  I get in Toshiba webstite and download touchpad driver (Synaptic pointing Device driver version 15.2.11.1) for my laptop, I installed it and see the laptop works normally.

But widows update continue downloading the synaptics driver update for Lenovo pointing device into my laptop, so I have to stop it by change device system (http://www.isunshare.com/windows-10/change-device-installation-settings-in-windows-10.html)

- Control panel > system and security > System
- On the left control panel click Advanced system settings, choose Hardware, click Device installation settings,
- Choose No, let me choose what to do,
- Deselect "Always install the best driver software from Windows Update", select "Never install driver software from Windows Update" and deselect "Automatically get the device app and info provided by your device manufacturer",
- And then hit Save Changes.

I had the same problem, with my keyboard, but all I needed to uninstall was the Lenovo mouse driver. In an attempt to solve my problem, before finding this solution I updated my keyboard driver, and it installed the lenovo driver. It is still installed and the keyboard appears to be working. Thank you for this solution, an end to a frustrating afternoon.

Appologies to all who have asked questions of me recently that I did not reply to. The reason was I was away on holiday taking a technology break and catching some rays.

ajmcginni - sorry I think you might have misunderstood. At the time of creating the thread I did not have a temporary fix

TamDac - I can confirm that uninstalling the Lenovo Pointing Device driver in favour of the "Standard PS2 Compatible" driver fixes the keyboard issue.

I am somewhat surprised that this fix has worked though as I everything was fine with all of the Lenovo drivers installed until the Toshiba driver was installed and a reboot happened.  As long as it stays fixed I am a happy man.
